Welcome to TM Hughes & Son Gas Services Ltd. We install Waste Disposal Units in Harlow and the surrounding areas.
What Is a Waste Disposal Unit & How Does It Work?
A Waste Disposal unit fits discreetly beneath your kitchen sink. Its purpose is to break down food scraps into fine particles and flush them away with running water. Instead of tossing leftover food into the bin, you can put them straight down the sink, drastically cutting the time you spend managing food rubbish bags.
A small electric motor powers the unit’s grinding ring. This mechanism safely grinds food scraps with the help of cold water. The resulting particles are washed away through your drain, leaving your kitchen cleaner and more pleasant.
What Can You Put In A Waste Disposal Unit?
Waste disposal units handle most soft organic scraps: fruit and vegetable peelings, small leftovers, and even eggshells (in limited amounts). If you’re dealing with large or dense items, it’s wise to chop them into smaller pieces first.
Excessive quantities of cooking oil, fibrous vegetables (like celery), and large bones can cause issues, blockages and even damage within the unit.
Non-food items, such as plastic or metal, should never be placed in the disposal.
Waste Disposal Unit Benefits
With a waste disposal unit, you’ll notice fewer kitchen bin liners, fewer lingering odours, and fewer pests. You’re also helping the environment by minimising food waste.
Another bonus is that by grinding up leftover food, you’ll make cooking and cleaning up simpler. No more carrying waste to the outside bin when preparing a meal.
Free Survey & Quote
Installing a waste disposal unit starts with a free, no-obligation survey and quote. One of our Plumbers will visit your home and assess your kitchen’s Plumbing setup, including the sink design, pipe layout, and available space beneath the cabinet. They will answer any questions and explain which models will fit your requirements. Once you approve the quote, an installation date is scheduled.
The Installation Process
The Plumber removes your existing drain fitting and replaces it with the mounting assembly for the Waste Disposal Unit. They then connect the unit to the sink outlet and the waste pipe, ensuring secure seals to prevent leaks. An electrical switch is installed to supply power to the unit.
After the unit is fitted, the Plumber tests it by running water and switching on the power.
Finally, our Plumber will show you how to use your new Waste Disposal Unit and go through best-use practices (including what can safely go down it) and how to clean and maintain your unit
