When it comes to heating your bathroom, you may want a standard radiator that matches other radiators in your home, a towel rail or a designer radiator to match your bathroom decor.
Underfloor heating can also be fitted for a nice warm floor underfoot when you get out of the bath.
Saniflos
Traditionally Toilets had to be fitted near the soil stack, limiting your choice of location. Now we can fit a Toilet anywhere in your home thanks to Saniflo Systems. A Macerator device sits discreetly behind your Toilet. The device breaks all Toilet waste down into a fine slurry which is then pumped into the sewer. With a Saniflo you can fit a Toilet in any available space you have in your home. Saniflos can also be used in combination with washing machines and dishwashers.
Shower Services
Our Plumbers install and repair all shower types, including electric, eco, power, digital, mixe,r and thermostatic Showers. A Plumber can quickly rectify any problems you may be having with your shower or shower pump (such as low water pressure or a leaking head). New Showers can be fitted with any existing heating system. A Plumber can advise you on the best shower for your unique situation.
Taps
Leaky or faulty taps can be repaired or replaced we install and repair all taps which include traditional Pillar, Mixer, Monobloc and commercial. Most leaking taps are repaired by replacing a new disc, cartridge, washer or ball (this will depend on what mechanism your tap uses). Some tap parts we carry in stock on our vans, others we can source locally the same day.
Toilets
Toilet services include installation of back to the wall, corner and wall hung toilets with any cistern. Whether that be a high, low or concealed. The Plumbers can fix any issue you currently have with your existing Toilets such as non-flushing, overfilling and blockages.
Waste Disposal Units
You may already have a Waste Disposal Unit fitted under the sink and are experiencing some problems with it? Or you may want one fitted?. Waste Disposal Units are a clean, energy-efficient method of disposing of food waste. We supply, fit and repair Waste Disposal Units.
Water Heaters
Believe it or not, some homes in Southend don’t have a Boiler. When this is the case, Water heaters are often installed to supply hot water. Our Plumbers fit both types of Water Heater vented (run off a cold water tank) and unvented (connected to mains water supply). Water Heaters are a common option for commercial premises also.
Southend Heating Services
Most homes in Southend use gas as their primary fuel for Boilers. Gas central heating systems are cheap to run, efficient and greener than electricity. The latest gas boilers run at over 90% efficiency. New electric boilers are also incredibly efficient; they are, however, more expensive to run. Our engineers work on all fuel types of central heating system, which includes gas, electricity and oil.
Boilers
We install, upgrade, service and repair all types and makes of boiler
Makes Of Boiler
Alpha, Ariston, Baxi, Ferolli, Glow-worm, Grundfos, Heat-line, Ideal, Keston, Potterton, Saunier Duval, Vaillant, Viessman and Vokera.
Types Of Boiler
The boiler, powered by gas, oil or electricity, heats water for your central heating, hot taps and shower. Waters heated via the mains supply and distributed directly to your hot taps and radiators or a storage cylinder for later use.

Combi Boilers
Combi boilers are mains-fed and heat water instantly an efficient all in one unit that doesn’t require external tanks, cylinders or pumps. Combi boilers are the simplest to install and maintain they also save space. A good option for smaller homes or mid-sized homes with good mains pressure and moderate hot water demand.
System Boilers
A system boiler can supply multiple bathrooms at the same time. The boiler features most components built-in but utilises a pressurised cylinder to store hot water, making them an excellent choice for mid-sized to larger homes. System boilers can improve water pressure; they take up more space (cupboard required for cylinder) and are more complicated to install than a combi boiler.
Regular Boilers
Regular boilers are also known as traditional or conventional boilers. Regular boilers are fed by tanks (usually in the loft) which feed the cylinder and radiator. Nowadays, regular boilers are often replaced by system and combi boilers as the whole system is complicated and bulky. Regular boilers are still fitted as upgrades (they are simple to install with existing systems) and in the largest of homes as they are suitable for supplying multiple bathrooms with large volumes of hot water.
Boiler Installation
Boilers will last 10-15 years. Towards the end of their life Boilers become inefficient and prone to breaking down. TM Hughes & Son have been installing new Boilers in Southend for a long time. So if you need a replacement Boiler, get in touch, and one of our Gas Safe Registered Engineers will provide you with a free no-obligation quote.
An engineer will visit your home and inspect your current Boiler and central heating system. You may want a new boiler of the same type. For example, if you have an old combi boiler, you may wish to install a new combi boiler put in its place. Maybe your heating and hot water requirements may have changed since your last boiler installation. You may have extended your home and require more hot water. If necessary, we can fit a new type of Boiler and convert your current system to work with your new Boiler (remove your old combi and install a system boiler and pressurised cylinder).
Everyone has different requirements when installing new boilers we will discuss what you need from your new Boiler and offer you varied options so you can choose the right Boiler at the right price for your budget. We fit all types (combi, system, regular), fuel types (gas, oil, electric) and make of Boiler. We plan all installations beforehand, so everything runs smoothly on the day, causing as little disruption as possible. After the installation of your new Boiler and central heating systems tested to ensure everything working correctly. Once the installations finished you’ll enjoy lower energy bills and a cosier feeling in your home.

Boiler Repairs
Boiler breakdown leaves you without heating and hot water, which is very unpleasant, especially in winter. The Gas Engineers on our team can be with you swiftly to repair your Boiler. Most Boiler parts are in stock, so repairs are usually quick with the minimal disruption to you and your family. We also repair boilers in domestic and commercial properties in and around Southend including Eastwood, Leigh On Sea and Westcliff On Sea.
When Boiler breakdowns occur, we aim to have an engineer out to you within a couple of hours. If this isn’t convenient for you, we can arrange a later time. Our boiler repair services include no call out charges. Our engineers are incredibly efficient at repairing boilers of all makes and types, having carried out many repairs in the area over the years.
Low pressure is a prime cause of boiler failure, the drop in pressures usually caused by a blockage, leak or failed pump, issues which we’ll quickly identify and fix. You may have noticed some leaking before the boiler failing. If you notice any leaks always get them looked at regardless if the boilers running or not. While the Boiler may be ok now, it’s sure to break in the near future. Other causes of failure include broken heat exchangers and thermocouples both parts which can be repaired or replaced.
In wintertime, frozen condensate pipes often cause boiler failure. We can defrost pipes quickly and get your Boiler back up and running. We’ll also make recommendations on insulating, so the problem doesn’t occur again.
Boiler Servicing
When it comes to Boiler breakdown, prevention is the most desirable option. The chances of Boiler breakdown can be significantly reduced with an annual service. Servicing will make your Boiler run smoothly and efficiently. Minimising the risk of carbon monoxide and validating many home insurance policies. Our Boiler Service fee is amongst the lowest in Southend.
Feel free to get in touch and book a boiler service at a time convenient to you so one of our Gas Safe Registered engineers can come and service your Boiler. We use a standard procedure to service boilers ensuring every aspect’s covered and the manufacturer’s requirements are also followed. All services are conducted swiftly in a tidy manner.
All boiler components are cleaned, the gas burners checked, along boiler pressure. We’ll check safety devices to make sure they function correctly, so there’s no damage in the event of boiler failure. The gas flow rate and flue are analysed to make sure gas is burned correctly, and all excess gasses are taken away by the flue. Seals and pipework are checked for leaks, which can usually be rectified during the service.
Once the boiler service is completed, we’ll switch it on and check that all radiators are getting hot. If we uncover any issues, we’ll make recommendations so you can plan to deal with them at some point in the future. Finally, a service record is written for you to keep, we’ll be in touch before your next service is due as a reminder.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms
All homes fitted with a fuel-burning appliance (such as a Boiler) must be fitted with a CO (carbon monoxide) Alarm. Carbon Monoxide is a scentless, tasteless, invisible gas that can kill. An alarm will warn you if any dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide leak into your home. You can buy CO alarms cheaply from any DIY store, or one of our Gas Engineers can supply and fit them for you.
Central Heating Controls
Set Central Heating controls to ensure your home’s heated at the correct temperature at the correct times. You won’t waste money on heating at night or when out. Old heating controls that are not set properly waste money. We supply, fit and program all heating controls. Including Thermostats, Programmers, Thermostatic Radiator Valves and Cylinder Thermostats. A simple reprogram of your existing controls will make some difference to your comfort and pocket. Upgrading your controls will make a lot of difference. You can’t beat a warm, cosy home.
Central Heating Pumps
The Central Heating Pump’s an overlooked but essential component in all heating systems. Without a pump, your heating won’t work, leaving you in the cold. Signs of a failing pump include strange noises, not starting and radiators not getting warm if this is happening to you remember we install and repair all types of Central Heating Pumps.
Immersion Heaters
Fitting an Immersion Heater to your cylinder is a quick and inexpensive job. These heaters are often used as a backup in case of Boiler failure. Powered by electricity, they work independently of the boiler and gas supply. A couple of hours is required to heat a standard cylinder that will stay hot all day if insulated. Immersion heaters can be fitted as the primary heater for your water—an option for homes off the Gas Grid.

Gas Safety Inspections
Landlords renting properties have to hire a Gas Safe Registered Heating Engineer to carry out safety checks and issue a CP12 certificate (Landlord Gas Safety Certificates). As a landlord, your tenants’ safety is your responsibility, and part of this is making sure gas appliances, fittings and flues provided for tenants are safe as outlined in The Gas Safety Regulations 1998.
It’s good practice as a landlord to have an inspection annually. Every year one of our engineers can come to your property to check the gas supply and appliances. The process is quick and pain-free. Book a convenient time (for yourself or the tenant). An engineer will visit your property at the agreed time and check all the gas appliance, including boilers, fires gas ovens, hob,s etc.
Connections are checked for tightness; the burn rate of each appliance is checked along with safety devices. Flues and chimneys are also tested. These checks ensure the gas appliances are safe and don’t pose a carbon monoxide risk. If an appliance doesn’t pass or there’s an issue with gas connections/pipework, we can advise and price repairs. Once the repairs have been undertaken, the engineer will write you a CP12 certificate which you can keep hold of and issue a copy to your existing tenants, so you both know the properties safe. In the event of any faults, we can correct them. So your property passes and is safe and legal.
Gas Fire Servicing
Like Boilers, Gas Fires should undergo an annual service. So they run correctly and reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. There are various fire and flue types which include Open Fronted, High-Efficiency and Outset Gas Fires. Flues include Brick Chimney/Class One, Pre-Fabricated or Pre-Cast. We service them all using a strict procedure that covers every aspect of all gas fires.
The fire assembly removed so all internal parts can be cleaned and inspected. Once the fires reassembled, we’ll check the burn rate, safety devices, flue and ventilation. After the service, your fire will run more efficiently. You can also relax in the knowledge you’re gas fires safe to use and is unlikely to break down.
If we find an issue with the fire, flue or an absent carbon monoxide alarm (which should accompany gas fires), we’ll make recommendations to resolve the issues. Annual servicing validates home emergency cover and gas fire warranties.
If you’re a landlord with a gas fire in your property, it’s good to have an annual service to lower the risk of breakdowns and ensure your tenants are safe. A written service record accompanies all gas fire services.

Gas Cookers
Gas Appliances need to be fitted or disconnected by a qualified Gas Safe Registered Engineer. We offer a gas cooker connection and disconnection service that allows for new gas cookers’ fast fitting. A gas safe registered engineer can come to your home once your new appliance has arrived.
The engineer will check the suitability of the cooker area. Your gas supply will be switched off, your old cooker will be disconnected and removed, and the new one put in its place. Once your new gas cookers installed, the gas supply switched on, and the cookers tested as per the manufacturer’s instructions (to make sure everything working and there are no faults with your new appliance)
Each installation is accompanied by a certificate you can use to validate the warranty (often a requirement by gas cooker manufacturers). Our connection/disconnection service covers gas cookers, range cookers, built-in gas ovens, dual fuel cookers, and all types of gas hob.
Please ensure the area around your new cookers clear and the cookers within 1.5 meters of the gas pipe before booking. If this is not the case, please call us so we can discuss further. We can also fit accessories such as extractor fans if required.

Underfloor Heating
Underfloor Heating can be installed in any home, even if you don’t have a gas boiler. Our Engineers have fitted many Wet & Electric Underfloor heating systems in Southend over the years and can advise you on the best method for your home. Energy-efficient and far superior to radiators, heat’s evenly distributed throughout the room, not just from one area on the wall. When radiators are removed, wall space is freed up, making the room feel bigger, making extra wall space allowing for more furniture.
Underfloor Heating is either supplied through pipes heated by hot water from the boiler (wet system) running under the floor or heated electric cables (electric mode). Both are accompanied by insulation. Wet pipes are set in screed or aluminium plates which retain and expel heat. Taking less energy to heat a room, and the floor will stay warm for a long time even if the heatings switched off. Room temperature is very consistent and easy to maintain.
You can’t beat the feel of heat underfoot, it’s easy to see why Underfloor Heating has become very popular in Southend in recent years. Once installed, you’ll find the system maintenance-free. Systems are simple, and all working parts are easily accessed above the ground. Manifolds and pumps can do with checking now and then to make sure everything’s in working order.
In the event your Underfloor Heating’s damaged, (a rare occurrence as pipes are underground out of harm’s way) we offer a repair service, problems under the floor are instantly identified with the use of a thermal imaging camera.
Power Flushing
Do you feel your radiators used to get hotter than they do nowadays? You’re probably right. Over time, central heating systems lose their effectiveness and reduce efficiency. Rust, debris and limescale (like you find in your kettle) are produced by the central heating system. Particles break away and form into sludge. The sludge builds up in radiators and pipes, preventing heat from getting through, costing you more money to run your heating.
Inefficient Central Heating systems clogged up with sludge can be cleared with Powerflushing (also known as jet flushing or hard flushing). A machine is attached to your system, and chemicals are pumped through for a few hours. Debris is gradually removed as the chemicals travel through the pipes dirty waters removed throughout the process. Powerflushing continues until the systems clearly. After the flush, your whole central heating system will be running like new with excellent energy efficiency. Your whole system will also be protected from corrosion and failure with the inclusion of inhibitor to the new clean water.
Powerflushing can be undertaken on any central heating system, no matter the boiler. It’s a very safe process that uses gentle pressure, so there’s no risk to your existing pipes and fittings. We use the industry-standard Kamco Power Flushing machine and chemicals. If your heating takes a long time to warm up, radiators are cold in places (even after bleeding). Or you have brown or black water when you bleed your radiators, are experiencing unusual noises or have noticed any pinhole leaks in the radiators, then your system could do with a Power Flush.

Thermal Imaging
We waste no time on Emergency Plumbing jobs by using Thermal Imaging. A Thermal Imaging camera instantly shows us where any heat loss or leaks are located in the heating system. No floorboards have to be lifted, and no walls have to be taken apart. Minimising disruption to your home and saving you time and money.
Oil Boilers
Some rural areas around Southend are off the Gas Grid. Properties in this area can use Oil instead, an energy-efficient fuel and an excellent alternative to Gas. Regular system and combi Oil Boilers along with Oil tanks are available for installation. We also service and repair all types of Oil Boiler.
Radiators & Valves
In Southend homes, we often find incorrectly set Radiator Valves which results in sub-optimal heating. Our Plumber can swiftly reset your valves. So your systems properly balanced and every room gets warm. Thermostatic valves offer the best control, so we always fit them when installing new radiators (flat panel, towel rails, column radiators and designer radiators). Thermostatic Valves can be fitted to existing radiators also.
Setting Your Central Heating System
Whether you use our engineers for installation, servicing and repairs or you have an existing central heating system in good working order, we are more than happy to set your central heating correctly.
We find many homes in Southend where the settings are incorrect, the systems not running at full efficiency. Every part of a system needs to work together to provide the optimal heat output and comfort.
Pressure
The pressure is very important in both the boiler and the system itself. When we do any work to a system, the pressure’s checked which will keep the boiler running continuously, allow the continuous flow of water through the system and stop excess pressure building up in the cylinder.
Thermostats
The thermostats are checked. We may recommend old thermostats are replaced once they get to 10-15 years. They can become inaccurate. The controls are often overlooked, incorrectly set, and you could be wasting energy. Properly set controls provide the desired warmth exactly when you need it.
Bleeding
Radiator bleeding is the most common form of central heating optimisation. If there’s air in your radiators, they won’t heat fully. One of our engineers will fully bleed your system and show you how to do it yourself, in case you get an air build-up in the future.
Valves
Radiators should have thermostatic valves which allow the adjustment of temperature in each room. If your home has old fashioned manual valves, we can upgrade them. Valves are checked, they can become stuck, which stops a radiator from heating up. Fortunately, they are simple to unstick.
Pumps
Pumps are checked to ensure they are set at the correct speed and are not lagging due to failure or incorrect settings. Inadequate pumps are repaired (if possible) or replaced.
Pipes
Pipes are checked for vulnerability. Frozen pipes often cause boilers to fail and can even split pipes resulting in a leak when the pipe defrosts. Vulnerable pipes are insulated accordingly.
Emergency Plumbing
Blockages
Blockages are the most common Plumbing Emergency in Southend. Blockages can cause your toilet and drain to back up, flooding your home. Signs of blockages include Toilets filling up with water when flushed, slow draining water, gurgling sounds and foul smells coming from the drains of your sinks, bath or shower. Always take action when you encounter the signs of a blockage. Firstly you can try to shift it yourself with a Plunger. Failing that, give us a call, and we’ll get it unblocked for you.
Burst Pipes
Burst pipes can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage. Uninsulated pipes in cold areas (such as the loft) are prone to freezing in winter. Frozen water expands and can split copper pipes causing them to leak. You’ll know if you have a burst pipe as water will start appearing in places it shouldn’t be (coming through the ceiling, for example). Turn off your water supply and call our Southend Plumber. On discovery of a frozen pipe, you must get it defrosted immediately. Ensuring your pipes are properly insulated will protect you from frozen/burst pipes.

Leaks
Leaks not only occur in split pipes. Leaks can occur in boilers, central heating systems, sinks, toilets, baths, showers and water tanks. Leaks need to be dealt with on discovery as water can be very damaging. Finding out where they are coming from is sometimes tricky, but we are very good at this. We’ll find the source of your leak and repair it quickly.
Mains Stopcocks
Knowing where your Mains Stopcock is located and making sure it works properly is very important. The first thing you’ll need to do in a Plumbing Emergency is to shut off the water supply via the Mains Stopcock. The stopcock controls the flow of water from the mains supply outside your home. Test your Stopcock and make sure it closes. If it’s seized up, it will need releasing or replacing.
Gas Leaks
Shut off your gas supply immediately if you smell gas. Do not smoke, do not switch on any lights or appliances, open all windows and doors (only if safe to do so). Evacuate everyone from your home and call us. We will send an Engineer round immediately. Do not go back into your home until the Gas leaks been dealt with and you have been given the all-clear.
Carbon Monoxide
Evacuate your home if your Carbon Monoxide alarm goes off. Give us a call, and we’ll be with you ASAP. Do not re-enter your home until a Gas Safe Registered Engineer has said it’s ok if you or any members of your family feel ill and are experiencing vomiting, dizziness, headaches, confusion or nausea, dial 999 and get an ambulance straight away.
