Kitchen Plumbing
Kitchen Tap Replacement and Repair is one of the most common jobs we carry out in the Billericay kitchen. Older taps regularly spring leaks, in which case they should be replaced or repaired. Worn washers or mechanisms cause dripping taps. The first step is to establish what type of tap you have.
These include Ball, Cartridge, Disc and Washer. Each of these mechanisms controls the flow of water, and all will wear out eventually. We carry most parts in stock for most taps, so a tap repair’s usually a quick and easy job. Sometimes taps are so old the replacement mechanism cannot be sourced, and sometimes taps leak out of the body. In this instance, water has caused corrosion to the tap itself and will need replacing.
Most Billericay homes have flexible hoses attached to their taps, allowing both the hot and cold water to be shut off beneath the taps. Hoses permit a quick change over when replacing taps. Older homes that lack flexible hoses will have them fitted as standard for every tap replacement we undertake.
Waste Disposal Units are a small, discreet and practical way of disposing of food waste. Food is ground into small pieces, mixed with water and flushed down the drain. Waste disposal units use little energy and are environmentally friendly. Our Plumbers have fitted lots over the years in Billericay, so if you want one let us know. Our Plumbers can deal with any Waste Disposal problems also, in case you run into any issues.
Every Kitchen in Billericay has a Washing Machine, and most will have A Dishwasher. We’re happy to Plumb in any of these essential appliances. Our Plumbers will make sure they’re connected and levelled properly, ensuring you’ll never suffer any leaks from the cold feed (a common problem on DIY fitting) or any problems caused by incorrect levelling.
Bathroom Plumbing
The Bathroom has more Plumbing than any other room in the house. A typical Billericay Bathroom will feature a Toilet, Bath, Basin and Shower, all of which will receive a lot of use. Such parts will need repairing, replacing and servicing. Bathroom Taps are prone to failure just as kitchen taps are, and again we can repair or replace bathroom taps quickly and efficiently.
One of the most common Plumbing problems is the dreaded blocked Toilet which the homeowner can sometimes unblock with a plunger. Deeper blockages that won’t shift will need a professional plumber’s attention sooner rather than later. A blockage (depending on where it is) can render all toilets in the home useless and unworkable but don’t worry. We’ll have the obstruction shifted in no time. Give us a call, and our Billericay Plumber will be with you ASAP. Toilets sometimes overfill, continuously fill or even leak. Ball valve issues inside the cistern are quick and straightforward jobs; toilet components are pretty much the same no matter what toilet you have, whether that be a close-coupled toilet, wall hung or corner toilet. Leaks can be more complicated, but we always get them fixed.
The TM Hughes team includes a full-time Bathroom Fitter who will work with you to design and fit the bathroom of your dreams. Every step of the Bathroom design is carefully planned so your bathroom is built to your taste and thoroughly functional. We have electricians and tilers on board, so every thing’s completed to the correct (and legal) standard. Styles include both traditional and modern Bathrooms with a wide range of flooring, tiles and heating options. Please contact us if you would like a free no-obligation quote for your new bathroom installation.
Power Showers can be fitted in new or existing bathrooms and a mixer, electric, eco, electric digital, and thermostatic showers. Whatever your current heating system, we can fit the ideal shower for your home; we also install repairs service all types of a shower pump. With us, you can rest assured all your shower requirements will be met.
Blockages
Every point in your kitchen and bathroom where water comes has a waste, so used water can exit into the drain without flooding your home. Waste’s serve toilets, showers, baths, basins, sinks, washing machines, dishwashers and Saniflo’s. Sometimes waste pipes block or are in the process of blocking. If your toilets filling up with excess water or water is draining very slowly from showers, baths, sinks etc., then you have a blockage in your waste system. Try unblocking with a plunger which will usually work on less severe blockages. If you can’t shift a blockage yourself, our local Plumber will have it cleared in minutes. Never ignore a blockage. They’ll never go away on their own and will only worsen before blocking completely.
Saniflo
We offer a full Saniflo Installation service to the residents of Billericay. The invention of the Saniflo system enabled the installation of Toilets anywhere in the home. In days gone by, Toilets needed to be fitted next to the soil stack, so Toilet installation was restricted. This changed when Saniflo released their Macerator equipment. The macerator pump used by Saniflos breaks down Toilet waste into a slurry which’s pumped into the sewer. Toilets can be fitted anywhere in the home or business premises with a Saniflo system. They are also compatible with washing machines, sinks, showers and baths.
Water Tank Services
Need a water tank installed or replaced? No problem! Our Billericay Plumbers have installed many over the years and will guide you on the best-sized tank and the best location. Every situation’s different the size of your tank will depend on your water system, and the shape will depend on the space you have available. We always ensure tanks are fitted as high as possible to give the best possible water pressure and safe from freezing and dust contamination.
Heating Services
TM Hughes & Son Plumbers are fully qualified and certified Gas Engineers also.
Plumbing work often crosses over into Gas work. Having engineers that are well versed in both Plumbing and Gas ensures quickly finished jobs.
Extra staff won’t have to be called in to get the job finished.

Installation, Servicing & Repair
Our heating services cover boilers, radiators, pumps, controls, cylinders, pipes, and all parts of any central heating system covered under our installation, servicing, and repair services. When parts can’t be repaired, we can usually replace/upgrade them.
Boilers
We are Worcester Bosch Accredited engineers. We also install, service and repair Boilers by Alpha, Ariston, Baxi, Ferolli, Glow-worm, Grundfos, Heat-line, Ideal, Keston, Potterton, Saunier Duval, Vaillant, Viessman and Vokera.
The best condensing Boilers are incredibly efficient, running at between 90+ % efficiency. As boilers age, they lose their effectiveness costing more to run. Wastage is also not good for the environment. If you have an old Boiler and are thinking of upgrading, please read our Boiler Installation section below.
The Boiler is an essential part of the central heating system. No boiler means no hot water for your radiators and taps (unless you have a cylinder with an immersion heater installed). Install a suitable Boiler and look after it with an annual service and a Powerflush of the entire system every five years or so and your Boiler will last a long time and run as efficiently as possible.
Combi Boilers
Combi Boilers provide both showers and taps with hot water. They don’t use storage cylinders which is useful when it comes to saving space. Combis Boilers heat water instantly as soon as the hot taps or heating’s turned on and uses a built-in pump to circulate the water around your radiators. Perfect for smaller homes, simpler and cheaper to install than system Boilers.
System Boilers
Larger homes with more people require more hot water. Often a Combi won’t meet the demands, so a System Boiler is the preferred option. A pressurised cylinder works in conjunction with the Boiler to store and distribute hot water around the home. If more than one person uses a tap, the hot water supply not affected. Perfect for medium to large-sized homes.
Regular Boilers
Regular or traditional Boilers used to be the standard system for all homes utilising a vented cylinder with water and feed and expansion tanks. In recent years regular boilers have made way for modern System and Combi Boilers but are still installed in homes where lots of hot waters required. The conventional system can cope with the largest hot water demands and are perfect for larger houses.
What Boiler?
When upgrading existing Boilers, you can have the same type put in, or you may upgrade to a different kind that will suit your situation better. Your choice of Boiler will depend entirely on your requirements and existing system. Older systems can be modified to accept new boiler types. Read more about Boiler Installation and services below.
Heating Optimisation
Heating systems are made up of various parts which work together to heat your home. Each component must be appropriately set to get the most out of your heating system. Resetting of controls and valves can often achieve perfect balance.
Sometimes the upgrading of parts is required. For example, you will have problems reaching your preferred heat in each room if you have old fashioned radiator valves combined with an old thermostat that’s inaccurate and can no longer measure temperature accurately.
Controls & Valves
Here we could upgrade your radiator valves to the latest thermostatic valves that allow the setting of different temperatures in different rooms. We could even upgrade your controls to the latest smart controls, enabling you to set each room’s temperature while you’re still at work. You come home, and your house is heated perfectly.
Central Heating Components
Every central heating system’s made up of various parts. Combi systems are the simplest consisting of the BoilerBoiler, pipes, thermostat, radiators and valves. Old regular systems are more complicated with added pump, cylinder, immersion heater feed and expansion tank. Every part must be appropriately set, something one of our engineers can do for you.
Boiler & System Pressure
The boiler pressure must be set correctly, to low your heating system won’t function properly, and your BoilerBoiler will keep switching off to high and issues (and even damage) could occur to your Boiler and other parts of the system.
Radiators
We have already discussed radiator valves. We also install and upgrade all radiators, including flat panel, designer, column, low surface, and towel radiators. We can help whether you want your radiators changed, upgraded, moved, or new radiators added. Peoples living requirements change, and sometimes old radiator positions are inconvenient, so radiators need moving.
Your radiators may be blocked with sludge. A good indication is dirty water when you bleed your radiators. Powerflushing can remedy this, which completely clears the system.
Pumps
Most central heating pumps have three settings if you find your heating inadequate, sometimes turning up the pump can help as long as it doesn’t lead to too much pressure in the system. Pumps do fail eventually and are usually the first thing to go on a central heating system. Pumps are, however, easy to replace, a simple job for our engineers.

Bathroom Installation
Our Plumbers and Gas Engineers regularly fix common bathroom problems such as broken taps and showers. We also have highly experienced bathroom fitters on hand to design and install your dream bathroom. You may have already seen your dream bathroom and want us to recreate it from a picture, no problem. You may not know precisely what you want, in which case we can go through all the options with you.
There are many different bathroom suites, tiles, furniture, lighting fixtures and fittings available. Any look or style can be created. For example, using a modern square suite with the latest fixtures and fittings will create a contemporary look. While fitting a freestanding bath and high flush toilet (both traditional rounded shaped) combined with black and white tiles will create a victorian look.
We can talk about who uses your bathroom to establish the best type of flooring for you. Families with children may want non-slip tiles, for example. You don’t have to have a full refurbishment. You may want a partial renovation or simple upgrades in your bathroom, for example, a change in wall tiles and a new shower.
We have tilers, electricians, plumbers and gas engineers on hand to guarantee a professional installation. Our bathroom fitter can visit your home, measure up your bathroom, discuss your needs and wants before writing a free no-obligation quote.
Boiler Installation
We have been installing Boilers in and around Billericay for many years. A boiler is an expensive purchase. Once installed, you’re going to be stuck with it for a few years. You must choose the best Boiler for your home, heat/hot water needs and budget. We offer a free no-obligation survey. One of our Boiler engineers will visit, inspect your system, answer questions and present you with various options.
We fit all types and make of Boiler we can do simple upgrades if you have an old combi boiler we’ll put a new one in its place to work with your existing system. Your heating and hot water demands may have increased since your last Boiler installation. We can upgrade your central heating system to accept a system boiler and increase your hot water storage.
A new boiler installation/upgrade will yield many benefits such as faster, more efficient heating, lower carbon footprint, lower fuel bills, and cosy home. Old boilers rapidly lose efficiency the older they become and develop issues, some of which are expensive to rectify. Read our boiler installation page for more information and to get a free no-obligation quote.

Boiler Repair
If you are experiencing any problems with your Boiler, we can quickly diagnose and rectify the fault. If your Boiler keeps turning off, the pilot light keeps blowing out, or it’s noisier than normal, then some things not right. Eventually, your Boiler will fail, leaving you without hot water and heating. Let us fix any minor issues you’re experiencing now before becoming major (and possibly expensive) issues.
In the event, your Boiler breakdown, we can have an engineer out to you within a couple of hours. We understand boiler breakdowns are unpleasant, and you need your Boiler back up and running as quickly as possible. We can fix any type and make of Boiler. Engineers carry many parts to make the process swifter.
Our engineers are available 24/7 for boiler repairs whether your a homeowner, landlord, business owner or tenant. Our services include no call out charges.
Boiler Servicing
An annual Boiler service ensures smooth, efficient operation while lowering the chance of breakdown. Most Boiler manufacturers recommend a yearly boiler service. Most home emergency cover policies stipulate an annual boiler service is essential to validate the warranty.
Boiler servicing is relatively cheap. A TM Hughes Boiler service is amongst the best-priced Billericay (and the surrounding areas, for that matter). After servicing, your Boiler will run at its best possible efficiency. A service will uncover any hidden issues that can be dealt with before they become more severe.
A boiler service is quick, clean with little disruption. We follow a set procedure that ensures every part of the boilers covered. All parts are cleaned and tested.
Signs of leakage indicate worn seals (which are replaced) or loose connections. Pipeworks checked and adjusted if necessary. Safety devices are tested (these are in place to prevent any damage in case of sudden stopping). The gas and central heating pressures tested, as is the flue and the rate exhaust gasses are expelled at.
A boiler service ensures your boilers safe and doesn’t pose a carbon monoxide risk. We can service your Boiler no matter the age, make or type.

Power Flushing
Your boilers ok and your radiators are fully bled, but they emit very little heat? Maybe they only get hot from the middle or only at the top?. If this is the case, your system needs cleaning. We do this with a process known as Power Flushing.
As water circulates, a central heating system limescale created, radiators rust from the inside and particles fall away. The limescale and rust particles settle in the bottom of radiators, creating silt like sediment that heating engineers call ‘sludge’.
The sludge builds up slowly but surely. Where there’s sludge, no heat can get through. That’s why your radiators only get hot in the middle or top. Not only is your system no longer efficient and more expensive to run, but the build-up can also damage your Boiler, pump, valves and pipes.
Don’t worry. We can remove the sludge from your system with Power Flushing. By pumping a mixture of water and chemicals through your system, the sludge is loosened and removed. Dirty waters collected (and taken away). The process is continued until your central heating systems totally clear.
After flushing, your system will heat fast, and your Boiler will run well. Ideally, a central heating system should be flushed every five years to prevent sludge from building up in the first place.

Underfloor Heating
Underfloor heating is the most efficient way to heat your home. By running pipes underneath the floor, heat rises over the entire area. Once warm, a heated floor stays maintains the heat meaning less fuels consumed to keep a given room at a constant temperature.
Radiators are not required on walls making more space available. Pipes are underfloor, so damage is a near impossibility. No wonder Underfloor heating has become very popular in Billericay over the last decade.
While Underfloor Heating is very common with new builds and extensions, it can be fitted into pretty much any home with or without an existing central heating system.
We install, upgrade, service and repair both wet and electric underfloor heating. Wet systems work with a conventional central heating system. Electric systems are wired into the mains electrical supply. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. The best type for you will depend on your property, existing system and budget.
If you already have an Underfloor Heating system, it’s a good idea to have the manifold and pump checked now and then. We can service these parts by checking them and replacing any worn/broken seals. If there’s an issue with your Underfloor Heating, we can quickly identify any problems under the floor with a thermal imaging camera.
Gas Safety Inspections, Landlords Certificates (CP12)
As a landlord, you must ensure your property is safe for your tenants. This includes the Gas system and appliances. We can issue both Gas Safety (and Electrical Safety) certificates. A CP12 certificate shows the gas system and appliances are safe and comply with the gas safety installation and use regulations 1998.
Properties must be inspected every time a new tenant moves in and every 12 months. Otherwise, you’re renting your property illegally, and your insurance may be invalid. A good landlord wants their tenants to be safe.
A Gas Safe Registered engineer inspects the gas system and appliances of your property. Appliances are tested, the gas must burn at the correct rate, exhaust gasses must be removed, and safety devices must work. This ensures there’s no possibility of a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning. Once everything’s checked and passed, Gas Safety certificates are written.
An appliance doesn’t pass; we can advise on repairs and write a quote. Some repairs can be carried out there and then otherwise we’ll arrange a time to return at a later date. We’ll write to you two months before your certificate expires so you have plenty of time to renew.

Gas Fire Servicing
While gas fires don’t work as hard as Boilers and are more a luxury than an essential appliance, they should be serviced every twelve months. A gas-free service allows all working parts of the fire to be removed and cleaned. Cleaning ensures the fire will function correctly and efficiently, giving you lovely warm heat.
During the service, we’ll check safety devices and ensure gas is burned at the required rate. Your chimney and flues also tested to make sure excess gasses are adequately removed. Servicing ensures your fire is safe and you’re not at risk from carbon monoxide.
Gas fire servicing’s often overlooked. Please consider a service if you haven’t had one in the last twelve months. You should defiantly have a service if you’re experiencing smokey rooms, soot stains or your fires difficult to light. We offer services at a very reasonable price.
Gas Cookers Installation & Disconnection
When installing a new gas cooker, oven or hob (or disconnecting an old one), you must use a Gas Safe Registered engineer. This ensures a safe installation and validation of the manufacturer’s warranty. One of our engineers can come to your property. Disconnect your old gas cooker and install your new one.
Your new cooker will be installed as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Once installed, we’ll test the cooker to make sure everything’s working. If you need accessories such as extractor fans or carbon monoxide alarms fitted, we can help with that too.
We can fit any type and make of gas cooker, oven or hob. Please ensure the cooker areas suitable for a new installation (a clear area is required in the ‘hot zone’ ). Follow the link below for more information or speak to one of our engineers.

Emergency Plumbing Billericay
TM Hughes & Son are on hand 24/7 to deal with Plumbing & Gas Emergencies that may occur, and unlike some other Plumbers in the area, we have no call out charges. A Plumber can get to you within 2 hours if your issue is urgent. Here are some damage limitation procedures you need to undertake before we can get to you. If you’re not sure, please call us, and we can go over these tasks on the Phone.
Leaking Water
Leaking water is usually caused by a burst pipe. If water’s leaking from anywhere (i.e. from the ceiling), the first thing to do is to shut off the mains water supply at the mains stopcock. The mains stopcock’s usually located in the kitchen (not always, though) and controls the water flow to your home from the mains water supply in the street.
Ensure you know where your mains stopcock is. The last time you want to look for it is in the middle of an emergency (you’ll be surprised how many people this happens to). Once the water’s shut off, any further damage will be prevented. You may have to shut off the water at your water tank also; we can advise you on this over the phone.
Burst pipes are a common winter problem. Uninsulated pipes are prone to freezing, frozen water expands, and this expansion’s often enough to split pipes. Make sure your pipes are insulated and if you feel one’s frozen, get it defrosted ASAP (we can insulate and defrost pipes also) before the frozen pipe turns into a burst pipe.
Gas Leaks
Gas Leaks are severe. If you smell gas, shut the supply off at the Shut Off Valve (if you don’t know where this is in your home, find out in case you ever experience a Gas emergency), evacuate everyone from the property, don’t smoke and don’t turn on any lights or appliances. Sparks can cause gas to ignite, and large gas leaks can cause huge explosions, so don’t leave anything to chance.
Open all windows and doors in the home (only if it’s safe to do so) and wait for an engineer to arrive, do not go back into your home or switch on the gas until one of our Gas Safe Registered Engineers has told you it’s safe to do so.
Carbon Monoxide
Any home that has a fuel-burning appliance must have a Carbon Monoxide alarm. Carbon Monoxide is invisible, scentless and can kill, make sure you’re protected. In the event, a carbon monoxide alarm starts beeping in your home, get yourself, your family and anyone else in the property out immediately and call us, do not re-enter until one of our Gas Safe Registered Engineers has checked your appliance and property and given you the all-clear. Call an ambulance if anyone’s experiencing vomiting, dizziness, headaches, confusion or nausea, all signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.
