How We Design & Build Bathrooms
When designing and building a bathroom, all the components have to work in unison to create a beautiful look while being highly functional for everyday use.
We take the following into consideration
- Wall Materials
- Floor Materials
- Heating
- The Bathroom Suite
- Taps
- Shower & Enclosure
- Lighting
- Storage
Every part from the wall materials to the storage is available in many different designs and forms, all selected on the design, look and feel of the finished bathroom.
Wall Materials
The Wall materials will set the overall look of the bathroom and are water and moisture resistant.
Tiles are most frequently fitted on bathroom walls. Not only do they look great, but they are also perfect at resisting moisture and water.
Endless colours, textures, patterns, and multiple tile shapes are available to create the look you want.
Endless styles can be created with tiles. For example, Tiles can be matched with floor tiles for a consistent look throughout (such as a Scandanavian design) or can contrast (dark wall tiles, light floor as in a modern design) while black and white tiles will create the ‘victorian look’.
Wall panels are an alternative to tiles. They are usually cheaper to buy and quicker to fit; many people prefer panels to tiles. A wide range of colours is on offer in PVC, Acrylic or Laminate.
Areas that are not tiled or panelled can be coated in water-resistant bathroom paint that compliments the design and style of your bathroom. Again there are hundreds of colours to choose from.
Floor Materials
Like the walls, bathroom flooring must be water-resistant as it’s inevitable it will get wet. Therefore it must also be anti-slip. Some bathroom flooring is more anti-slip than others, so the type you choose will to some extent, depend on who’s using the bathroom.
The most familiar bathroom materials are porcelain tiles and vinyl. Both are hard wearing and will last many years. In addition, porcelains are used over ceramic as it’s less prone to cracking.
Both materials can be slippery when wet. Some floor tiles are textured to provide some protection.
Vynil is generally cheaper and easier to fit than porcelain tiles available on a roll or pre-cut tiles.
Alternative floor materials include concrete which enhances the look with some styles of bathrooms, although it’s messy to fit and will need treating now and then.
Rubber is another very soft alternative and grips underfoot well, a good choice for children and older people who are more prone to slipping over.
Heating
Most bathrooms are heated. Before we fit your floor, we can install Underfloor Heating which will heat your bathroom over the entire surface area and add an extra dimension of comfort. We install both electric and underfloor heating.
Whether you have underfloor heating or not, most bathrooms are fitted with a heated towel rail style radiator. Again wet and electric versions are available.
Alternatively, you may like a designer radiator that compliments the look of your bathroom. For example, cast iron radiators work well in traditional bathrooms, while vertical radiators work well in modern bathrooms.
Bathroom Suites
Bathroom Suites are available to complement any style of bathroom consisting of a bath, toilet, basin and shower enclosure if your bathroom requires one.
Baths are generally constructed from steel or acrylic, while toilets and basins are mostly made from ceramic. Alternative materials are possible for edgy designs and bathroom styles or if you want something different.
Baths are available in a range of lengths to ensure they can fit the required space exactly. Standard and corner baths generally include a panel. Freestanding baths are another option and work well with most bathroom designs.
Basins and toilets come in various styles. Basin styles include wall hung, pedestal, basin, under the counter and more.
Toilet styles include freestanding, wall hung, corner and back to the wall. In addition, most toilets these days are fitted with water-saving flush mechanisms.
Taps
Taps for your bath and basin are chosen following the bathroom design and style. Many traditional and modern taps are on offer in the following forms.
- Pillar – Single hot and cold taps
- Monobloc – Mixes hot and cold water inside the tap
- Mixer – A joined tap of both hot and cold adjust either one to get the correct temperature
- Thermostatic – Not the best looking, but the safety ensures no one gets scalded
Bathroom Showers
Most bathrooms we fit will include a shower. Showers are fitted over the bath or in an enclosure. Shower types include
- Mixer – Mixes both hot and cold water to reach your preferred temperature
- Thermostatic – Safety showers that maintain a set temperature
- Electric – Heat’s cold water to hot instantly, no hot water supply required
- Power – Utilises a pump for a powerful spray
- Eco – Consumes around 50% less water than conventional showers
- Digital – Modern showers that utilise digital controls
Lighting
Bathroom lights provide ambience for your day to day bathroom tasks such as grooming while enhancing the decorative features and design.
Bathroom lighting is moisture and water-resistant.
Flush, Semi-flush and spotlights are the best options from the bathroom as they are mostly out of harm’s way in the ceiling.
Bathroom wall lights can also be fitted. A vanity light is the most common above a mirror.
Storage
Storage units are available in many different colours and styles to compliment your floor and wall materials. Storage includes vanity units, wall cabinets and drawers, racks, shelves and cupboards.
We’ll install storage in all the right places, out of the way while being easy to reach for those everyday essential bathroom items.
