Why Your Central Heating System Needs Cleaning

Central Heating Systems create a substance known as ‘Sludge’. A mix of particles builds up in the central heating system, preventing correct hot water flow and radiators from heating properly.

Central heating systems create limescale, rust, oil, and other debris, breaking down and settling at the bottom of radiators and pipes.

Built-up systems make the Boiler work harder, cost more to run, and cause blockages, preventing the central heating system from working.

Power Flushing removes sludge build-ups by pumping chemicals through the system until thoroughly cleansed.

Afterwards, your Boiler and central heating system runs entirely, hotter and more efficiently.

Signs Your System Needs Powerflushing

The following signs indicate your system is due to a Powerflush

Dirty Water

If the water in your radiator is brown or black (you’ll notice when bleeding the radiator), sludge is present.

Heating Takes Too Long To Heat Up

Radiators should heat quickly, fully within 30 minutes. If your radiators take a long time to heat up, then you likely have sludge in your system.

Radiators Cold In Bottom & Middle

If any of your radiators remain cold at the bottom (or worse, the bottom and middle) and are hot at the middle/top, then your system is built up and would benefit from Powerflushing.

Leaking Pipes Or Radiators

Sludge is corrosive and can eventually corrode radiators and pipes from the inside out, causing pinhole leaks. Such leaks indicate sludge is present in the system.

You’re Having A New Boiler Fitted

New Boiler Installations require a Powerflush/system cleanse beforehand to ensure warranty validation.

The Boiler manufacturer is unlikely to honour the guarantee if you cannot prove the system was cleansed by a Gas Safe Registered engineer before the boiler was installed.

Also, you don’t want dirty water running through your new Boiler, putting unnecessary strain on the clean and new Boiler components.

How Power Flushing Works

Your central heating system is switched on to check the recorded heat output so we can show you the improvement after flushing.

An industry-standard Power Flushing machine made by Kamco is connected to your central heating system. Where we connect it depends on your boiler and central heating system.

• For Combination Boilers, the machines connected at the head
• For System and Regular Boilers the machines connected at the pump

Kamco chemicals are mixed with water pumped around your system at high pressure through your pipes, Boiler, radiators and valves.

The chemicals are continuously circulated around the system, gradually dislodging and breaking down the sludge as it goes.

The broken-down sludge is collected by the Power Flushing machine and removed. 

The engineer collects the sludge into bottles. The dirty sludge water is taken away and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

The machine is kept running until the water in the system runs clear and the engineers are satisfied the system’s thoroughly cleansed.

Once your system’s cleaned, an inhibitor is added to help prevent sludge build-up again in the future.

The process takes a few hours, depending on the severity of the sludge build-up in your system. But, overall, the procedure doesn’t need much space and is non-disruptive to your everyday activities.

After Powerflushing

Once the procedure is completed, our engineer will switch your central heating system and re-record the temperature. You should notice your radiators are heating quickly and the improved heat output.

Now the water is flowing freely through your system. As a result, your Boiler no longer has to work as hard to keep up with the heat demand.

Every radiator in your home is hot from top to bottom, heating every room swiftly. As a result, you may notice that your system runs quieter with no irritating noises.

There’s less chance you’ll experience issues with your Boiler now the system is fully cleaned, and the added inhibitor will ensure it’s a long time before sludge makes an appearance again. 

Your energy efficiency is improved, and you may notice a reduction in your energy spending.
