When To Install A New Boiler
Is it time you installed a new Boiler? Use these factors to help you decide.
Your Boiler Is Over 10 Years Old
New Boilers are incredibly efficient and will remain so for several years after installation (as long as you have them serviced each year).
As Boilers age, they become less efficient. So if yours is over ten years old, it’s probably wasting a substantial percentage of all fuel burned.
Old Boilers have been known to waste up to 45% of the fuel that’s burned, and considering Boilers are the most significant fuel-consuming appliance in a household, that’s a lot of wasted money.
If your Boilers are over ten years old, it’s time to consider upgrading.
The Guarantee Has Expired
New Boiler installations come with a guarantee that they will remain valid for several years (as long as the boiler is fitted by a gas-safe registered engineer and is serviced annually). Once the guarantee has expired, you may get a few more years out of your Boiler.
However, your Boiler is less efficient at that stage of its life, costing more money to run and more likely to break down. Once the guarantee expires, you are responsible for repairing the Boiler if it breaks down (unless your home insurance covers it)
Boiler breakdowns can be costly, and parts are not always obtainable for older Boilers.
If your Boiler guarantee has expired, it may be worth looking into having a new Boiler installed.
Boiler Issues
If you’re experiencing persistent problems with your Boiler, such as constant switching off, low pressure, leaks, pilot light problems, etc, get your Boiler checked by a gas engineer.
An engineer will verify what the issue is and the cost of repair. If the price is substantial and the Boiler is old, you may be better off putting the repair cost towards a new Boiler.
Your Boiler Is Written Off
If you suffer a Boiler breakdown and the engineer determines an uneconomical repair, a new Boiler is the only option.
Boiler Types And Types Of Boiler Installation
Your Boiler will fall into three categories (whatever fuel your Boiler uses and the size of the Boiler): ‘Combination’ ‘System’ or ‘Regular.’
Combination Boilers
Combination Boilers are extremely popular, accounting for around 50% of all Boiler installations.
Combination Boilers have everything built into the unit, requiring no external parts like pumps and cylinders.
Hot water is heated instantly when the hot water tap or central heating is turned on. The combi Boiler heats and distributes the water to your radiators and taps.
Combination Boiler installations are generally cheaper than System and Regular Boiler installations as they are quicker to install and less complex.
Combination Boilers are perfect for small to medium-sized homes. They can also be fitted in larger homes, although larger homes are better served by System or Regular Boilers.
System Boilers
System Boilers are the first choice for medium- to larger-sized homes as they can more efficiently service multiple bathrooms simultaneously.
System Boilers work on a pressurised system, often ensuring better hot water delivery.
System Boilers include a pressurised hot water cylinder so you have a supply of hot water in reserve that can adequately supply two or more hot water points.
The cylinder also includes a backup immersion heater so you can still enjoy hot water during a Boiler breakdown.
Regular Boilers
Regular Boilers utilise a traditional central heating system, including an unpressurised hot water cylinder and feed and expansion tanks.
Regular Boilers are kept topped up continuously, so you still have hot water if someone in the house runs a hot water tap in a different room.
Regular Boilers are bulky and occupy space because of the water tank and cylinder. They are, however, very good at serving larger properties’ heating and hot water needs.
Regular Boilers work with central heating systems for all ages.
All the above Boilers will run off gas, electricity, LPG or oil and are available in multiple sizes to cope with homes with fewer than ten radiators and properties with 25+ radiators.
Types Of Boiler Installation
We will most commonly remove your old Boiler and put a new one of the same type in its place.
For example, if you have a Combination Boiler, we’ll remove your old one and fit a new one in its place.
Likewise, with a system Boiler, we’ll remove your old System Boiler and fit a new one to work with your existing pressurised cylinder.
Straightforward replacements are the most common form of Boiler installation.
Have your Heating & Hot Water Needs Changed In Recent Years?
A typical household’s heating and hot water requirements can change over time. If this applies to you, we can fit a different type of Boiler to work with your current heating and hot water usage.
For example
Your family gets bigger. You have an extension and need increased hot water. You have a Combination Boiler that can no longer cope with the demand.
In this instance, we’ll either fit a large combination Boiler or convert your central heating system to take a System Boiler and pressurised hot water cylinder.
Or maybe you have a Regular Boiler in place but no longer need an ample hot water supply as your children have grown up and left home?
In this case, we could remove your Regular Boiler, hot water cylinder, and water tanks by installing a new combination Boiler.
You now have a more efficient Boiler that reflects your heating and hot water usage. You also have more space available in your home with the omission of the water tanks and cylinders.
Improve Your Central Heating Control
When we install your new Boiler, we can fit modern controls and thermostatic valves to your radiators so you can better control the temperatures of your home or even each room.
