Bathroom Installation
Our plumbers, heating engineers, and electricians do full bathroom refurbishments and installations. They also work on boilers. Our staff have the skills and experience. They will create your dream bathroom. It could be a traditional suite with round edges and classic taps. It could also have a modern design with the latest shower enclosure and monobloc taps. We take care of everything from flooring to radiators. We’ll work with you to show you what’s possible and plan your Bathroom down to the last detail so it’s built or refurbished to your exact specifications.
Bathroom designs can follow a theme (like Victorian, Scandinavian, shabby chic, modern, etc.). You can also choose your tiles, suite, and flooring. Designs can be simple or complex; it’s entirely up to you. If you see a bathroom design you like the look of online or in a magazine, show us, and we can copy it.
We build bathrooms to a high standard from the ground up. We’ll lay a non-slip waterproof floor. There are various choices, including tiles, concrete, vinyl, and even wood (for certain ‘looks’). We fit Underfloor heating into many bathrooms. Nothing beats a warm floor when stepping out of the bath. Underfloor heating in conjunction with a heated towel rail is a popular option.
Many Bathroom suites are available in different shapes, sizes, and designs. Baths, basins, toilets, and showers can be sourced to fit any space. Our fitter will ensure you get the most out of your Bathroom, making suggestions for the best possible performance. We handle all the electrical work. We are skilled in bathroom lighting. It is key for a specific style.
Bathrooms can be partially refurbished. You may like your existing suite, taps, fixtures, and fittings and only want new tiles on the floor, walls, or both. This is okay; we handle all types of bathroom work, big and small.
Shower Services
We install or replace electric, eco, power, digital, mixer, and thermostatic showers. We also repair them and adjust their pressure.
We also supply and fit all shower pump types, including standard, universal, single, and double impellor pumps for negative or positive heads. Whatever your heating system, we have covered your shower needs.
Toilet Installation & Repairs
Our Plumbers install and repair all types of toilets, including close-coupled, back-to-the-wall, wall-hung, and corner toilets. We can also fit all cisterns, including low, high, and concealed ones.
We will remedy any problems you have with your existing toilet. Common problems in Brentwood are blockages, overfilling and broken/non-working flushing.
Waste Disposal Units
Waste Disposal units are a great addition to any kitchen. They allow the quick and clean disposal of all your food waste.
They are energy-efficient and self-cleaning, fitting underneath the sink. Food waste is ground into beautiful pieces, mixed with water, and flushed into the drain.
Let us know if you want one fitted or need help with an existing unit.
Tap Installation & Repairs
We install traditional Pillar, Mixer, Monobloc, and commercial taps. If you want a change, your existing taps can be replaced or repaired if they leak.
Both kitchen and bathroom taps use mechanisms that will wear out. They are simple enough to replace whether they use a disc, washer, cartridge or ball system.
We carry various Tap parts in stock and can source the ones we don’t carry on the same day.
Blockages
Blockages are the most common Plumbing issue in the Brentwood Home. Is your toilet pan filling up when you flush? Is water draining slowly from your sink, shower, or bath? Are there bad smells or gurgling noises coming from the drain? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then you have a blockage, which we can shift for you in no time. Whatever you do, please don’t leave it. Your pipes will block, stopping water from flowing, which could flood your kitchen or bathroom.
Burst Pipes
Burst pipes usually occur in winter. An uninsulated pipe freezes, expands, and splits, causing a continuous leak when the water thaws. Turn off the main water supply and give us a call. We’ll be with you ASAP. We also defrost frozen pipes and offer a pipe insulation service. Burst pipes can be very damaging and expensive. Prevention is better than cure. Insulate your pipes before winter arrives.
Leaks
Any leak can cause a lot of damage; however, it’s important to repair small leaks when you discover them. Leaks can occur in pipes, baths, boilers, central heating systems, sinks, toilets, and water tanks. The source of a leak is not always clear. But don’t worry. One of our plumbers will quickly find where the leaks are coming from and fix them fast.
Mains Stopcocks
The main stopcock controls water flow into your home from the main water supply in the street. In a Plumbing emergency, you will have to shut off the water supply via the main stopcock. Ensure you know where your main stopcock is and that it works correctly. Many in Brentwood haven’t used it in years and have seized up, so they must be freed or replaced.
Saniflos
Saniflo Systems are Macerator devices that turn toilet waste into a slurry pumped through pipes into the sewer. The release of Saniflo allowed toilets to be installed anywhere in the home—a cupboard, the loft, the garage, and even anywhere you want. We offer a full Saniflo fitting service to our Brentwood customers. There are several types available on the market. Our Plumber will advise you on the best one for your home and situation.
Thermal Imaging
Our Thermal Imaging camera detects most plumbing and heating problems. Thermography spots heat loss and leaks in heating systems and pipes. It saves time (and the customer money) and avoids any disruption. Lifting floorboards and cutting into walls would have otherwise caused disruption.
Water Cylinders
There are two types of water cylinders, vented and unvented; we work with both. Vented cylinders draw water from a cold water tank (located in the loft) and distribute heated water using gravity. Many older homes in Brentwood have vented cylinders. Unvented cylinders are often found in newer homes in the area—no tanks are required as the cylinders are fed from the mains. Manufacturers recommend unvented water cylinders be serviced every 12 months. We install, service, and repair both types of water cylinders.
Water Heaters
Water heaters are an excellent heating water option when a boiler isn’t present; we often install them on commercial properties. Vented Heaters run off a cold water cistern, while Unvented heaters are connected to the main water supply. Other water heaters include instantaneous and boiling water dispensers.
Heating Services
All TM Hughes & Son staff are Plumbers and Heating Engineers (with the relevant Gas Safe accreditation)
Our Heating Services cover installing, servicing, and repairing all heating parts. These include boilers, radiators, controls, pumps, pipes, and valves. We also offer Underfloor Heating and Powerflushing services.
Most homes in the Brentwood area have Gas-powered heating systems. We can work on all fuel types, including Gas, electric, and Oil. Gas is cheap and more environmentally friendly than electricity. Electric and Oil boilers are often found in homes off the gas grid.
Boilers
TM Hughes & Son are Worcester Bosch Accredited engineers. We also install, service and repair Boilers by Alpha, Ariston, Baxi, Ferolli, Glow-worm, Grundfos, Heat-line, Ideal, Keston, Potterton, Saunier Duval, Vaillant, Viessman and Vokera. You can read more about our Boiler services below.
All parts of a central heating system are essential, working in unison to provide hot water and heat. Life would be very uncomfortable indeed without central heating. The most vital part is the Boiler, which heats water for your taps, shower, and radiators. Boilers work extremely hard 365 days a year. An annual service is vital to keep them running at the best possible efficiency. Periodic power flushing will also significantly benefit your Boiler and central heating system.
The best condensing boilers run at over 90% efficiency. Old boilers (those over 15 years) can operate at as low as 60% efficiency, wasting 40% of the fuel burned—bad news for your pocket and the environment.
Homeowners usually upgrade their boilers when they feel they are no longer efficient or fail beyond repair. When upgrading, it’s straightforward to fit a boiler of the same type in its place. Alternatively, you may want a different boiler that suits your needs better.
Combi Boilers
The Combi is the preferred option for smaller homes. It is also the choice for most UK homes, accounting for about 50% of all boiler installations. It provides instant hot water, has a built-in pump (no external pump required), and doesn’t need a cylinder. It is economical and saves space.
System Boilers
This is the preferred choice for larger homes requiring hot water, so the shower and hot taps can be used simultaneously. It features a pressurised cylinder for hot water storage, large enough to provide a family home. It will still supply hot water if the boiler fails (as long as an immersion heater is fitted).
Regular Boilers
The original Boiler and regular systems are still found in older homes. They use a vented cylinder, feed, and expansion tanks, which makes the whole system bulky and complicated. Modern combi and system boiler covers are favoured for most situations. However, regular boilers are fitted as upgrades to existing systems and the biggest homes. The system design allows for a continuous hot water supply at multiple points, which is ideal for the largest homes.
Boiler Installation
TM Hughes & Son have been installing and replacing Boilers throughout Brentwood for years. Our engineers are Gas Safe Registered. They are also Worcester Bosch Accredited. So, we can help you choose the best boiler for your home and budget. We offer free, no-obligation Boiler Quotes and up to a ten-year warranty on new Boiler installations.
A boiler is a big purchase. Once installed, it will serve your home for the next 15 years or more. You must pick the right Boiler for your home and hot water demands. An engineer will visit to examine your existing Boiler and central heating system. A straight upgrade may be required to remove your old Boiler and put a new one in its place.
If your heating and hot water demands have increased or decreased, you may want a different type of Boiler. For example, remove a traditional Boiler with water tanks and cylinders and replace it with a new combi Boiler, freeing up space. That is not a problem. We can convert your existing central heating system to accept a new boiler type. Don’t worry if you’re not sure about boiler sizes and types. One of our friendly engineers will go through all the options (and prices) with you.
Installing a new energy-efficient Boiler will save you money on gas bills and make your home feel cosier. Most new Boilers nowadays run at over 90% efficiency, while old boilers run as low as 60% efficiency—a significant saving.
Boiler Repairs
The household Boiler is the hardest working appliance in your home. Day after day, month after month, year after year, your Boiler works to supply you and your family with hot water. Older Boilers are prone to breaking down, usually in winter when you need them the most. In the event of Boiler Failure, we can be with you within 2 hours and carry most Boiler parts in stock so we can have your heating and hot water back on in no time.
We fix all Boiler issues before they cause the Boiler to fail (which could cause damage and be expensive to repair). Issues such as low pressure, extinguishing pilot lights and loud noises can be examined and repaired. Sometimes, removing and cleaning certain parts are enough to get the Boiler running. Other times, parts need to be ordered. Usually a swift process, our engineers have the essential parts on their vans. We have good relationships with local suppliers. If a part’s required and we don’t have it, we can usually pop out and get it, ensuring boiler repair occurs the same day.
Engineers are on call 24/7 to deal with boiler breakdowns. We serve homeowners, landlords, tenants, and business owners. Our repair service covers all types and makes of Boiler.
Boiler Servicing
The best way to prevent Boiler Breakdown is to have an annual service. This ensures your Boiler runs well and is low-cost. Our Boiler servicing is amongst the best priced in Brentwood.
Boiler manufacturers and home emergency cover policies generally recommend annual servicing. On home insurance callouts for boiler breakdowns, the engineer will likely ask for a service record, as servicing is necessary for insurance validation.
During the service, our engineers can find and fix small faults. They do this before the faults become serious and cause boiler breakdown and damage in severe cases. Boiler Servicing also protects you and your family from carbon monoxide poisoning.
When you book a service, one of our Gas Safe Registered engineers will show up at the agreed time and present his Gas Safe ID. Certified, experienced professionals always carry out servicing. The service itself is relatively swift and tidy. A procedure is followed that covers every part of the Boiler.
The casings were checked for damage and leaks. Internal components are cleaned, and all seals and connections are checked. Loose connections are tightened, and worn seals are replaced. We’ll also check all pipework to ensure it’s in good working order. Safety devices are tested, such as gas and Boiler pressure. The service ensures all exhaust gasses go through the flue. This is essential for preventing carbon monoxide poisoning.
We service all boilers (regular, Combi, and system), all fuel types (Gas, electric, and oil), and makes.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Carbon Monoxide is a deadly invisible gas produced when carbon-based fuels are not fully burned. Any fuel-burning appliance is a potential risk. Your home must be fitted with carbon monoxide alarms to fit you, or you must get us to fit them for you. If your Carbon Monoxide Alarm goes off, get everyone out. Call an ambulance if anyone shows signs of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning. Call us, and we will be with you immediately. Doonly re-enter your home once we have given you the all-clear.
Central Heating Controls
Your Central Heating Controls ensure your systems are set optimally. They keep your home warm while saving energy when the heat’s not needed. Old or incorrectly set Heating Programmers can result in wasted energy and money. Our Brentwood Heating Engineers supply, fit, and set all heating controls. These include Thermostats, Programmers, Thermostatic Radiator Valves, and Cylinder Thermostats. Replacing or resetting your controls can save money and make your home more comfortable.
Your controls set your desired temperature and establish when your heating and hot water turn on/off. Correctly set controls to ensure you have heat and hot water when needed and that no energy is wasted. Modern central heating systems will have the following controls.
- A Thermostat – Sets the temperature.
- A Programmer – Sets the times heating and water is active
- Thermostatic Radiator Valves – Sets the temperature of each room
- Cylinder thermostat – This thermostat sets the water temperature in the cylinder. It does not work for combi boiler systems.
Central Heating Pumps
Your Central Heating Pump moves hot water around your home and heating system, keeping you warm and supplied with hot tap water. If your pump fails, you’ll have no hot water or heating. We supply, fit, replace, and repair central heating pumps. So, if some or none of your radiators are getting warm, your pumps are making weird noises, or they won’t start, why not let one of our plumbers look at it? Pumps are located within the Boiler or on the system. This will depend on your Boiler and system. Power showers utilise a pump also. We install, upgrade and repair both central heating pumps and shower pumps.
Immersion Heaters
Fitting an Immersion Heater to your cylinder gives you the option of gas and electricity as fuel for your hot water supply. They are a backup in case your Boiler fails. An immersion heater will heat a typical 120-litre cylinder in a couple of hours, and a well-insulated cylinder will keep your water hot all day.
Oil Boilers
Oil Boilers are off the main gas grid in some rural areas around Brentwood. Oil is an excellent alternative to Gas with good energy efficiency. Our engineers are fully qualified to supply, install, service, and repair all oil boilers, including regular, system, and Combi. We also cover all aspects of Oil supply tank work.
Radiators & Valves
Radiators and Valves need to be set correctly. Radiators and valves must also be in good working order to ensure optimal heat output for each room. We can quickly set your Radiators if you’re experiencing problems such as only some radiators getting warm. We can supply and fit new radiators and valves. These include flat panels, towel rails, column radiators, and designer radiators. Thermostatic valves are fitted to all new Radiator installations as standard. We can also upgrade your old manual valves to a modern Thermostatic if you want better control of heat in every room.
System Balancing
All components must be set for the Boiler and central heating system to function at its best. If you feel you’re not getting the most from your system, one of our engineers can set everything correctly. It’s amazing how many households have their system incorrectly, wasting money unnecessarily. Sometimes, upgraded parts are in order. For example, replacing manual radiator valves with thermostatic valves can improve comfort. It can also reduce energy use.
Gas Cooker Fitting
By law, a gas-safe engineer must install or disconnect gas appliances. We often do this in Brentwood. Our engineers can fit or disconnect Gas, LPG and Dual Fuel Cookers, ovens and hobs. The service includes the required Gas Safe certification. This certification validates household and landlord insurance.
Gas cooker connection and disconnection are swift processes. Your old cookers are pulled out and disconnected, and your new cookers are unpacked, connected, put in place, and tested.
Always use a gas-safe registered engineer when fitting or removing gas cookers. It’s not a DIY job and can be very dangerous. We offer a disconnection/connection service at a very reasonable price.
We fit gas ovens, cookers, and hobs of any size and make. All appliances are fitted and tested to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure your new cookers are working properly. Using us will validate your cooker warranty. Most state a qualified gas engineer must fit the oven (otherwise, the warranties are invalid)
We can also install any required accessories, such as extractor fans, oven switches, smoke/carbon monoxide alarms, etc.
Gas Fire Servicing
Gas Fires should be serviced annually to ensure they run efficiently and are not a carbon monoxide risk. We service three types of gas fires: Standard Open-Fronted, High-Efficiency, and Outset. We also service all flue types: Brick Chimney/Class One, Pre-Fabricated, and Pre-Cast. A service record is included with every Gas Fire Service.
If you haven’t had your gas fire serviced in the past twelve months, noticed soot stains on the exterior, had a smokey room, or found fires hard to light, it’s time you had a service.
We offer gas fire servicing, which will help your fire run safely and efficiently. A service uncovers any problems, some of which can be rectified during the service.
An engineer will dismantle the fire’s working parts and thoroughly clean every component so your fire runs smoothly. Chimneys and flues are very important because they expel excess gasses. We’ll check gasses to ensure they are removed at the required rate. Finally, the safety devices are checked before the fires are put back together.
Carbon monoxide alarms should accompany gas fires. We can advise you if alarms are not present.
Gas Safety Inspections
Gas Safety Inspections and safety certificates are a legal requirement for landlords. We issue Landlord Gas Safety Certificates (also known as CP12). We can check your property every 12 months and issue the correct certification, ensuring you and your property are legally above board. If your gas system or appliances don’t pass the inspection, we’ll do the necessary work so your property passes.
We make gas safety inspections for landlords easy. If you let a property, a gas inspection must occur every 12 months or whenever a new tenant moves in. An inspection verifies that your property is safe. A CP12 certificate proves your gas system and appliances are safe for tenants. It shows they comply with the Gas Safety Installation and Use Regulations 1998.
Qualified gas-safe engineers perform inspections. They visually inspect every appliance and check that gas is burned correctly. They also ensure that exhaust gases are safely exposed (no carbon monoxide risk) and that safety devices work. Once everything is tested and passed, a certificate is written and issued.
Once passed, you can rent your property safely and legally and relax in the knowledge that your property and tenants are safe. Inspections also validate your landlord’s insurance.
If your property is not inspected, we will advise on repairs and return once completed. Corrections can often be carried out during the inspection. We always write to customers two months before their landlord’s certificates expire as a reminder.
Underfloor Heating
Underfloor Heating provides even heat distribution throughout a room. Pipes (wet system) or Coils (Electric System) run under the floor, supplying heat underfoot over the room’s surface area. Underfloor Heating uses less energy than radiators, the absence of which saves space, making your home look and feel bigger. Our Brentwood Heating Engineers install, service, and repair wet and electric Underfloor Heating Systems.
Wet Underfloor Heating (AKA water or hydronic underfloor heating) pumps hot water through pipes under the floor. The pipes are set in screed, insulation, or specially made tiles. The screed, insulation, or tiles are also heated; they retain and emit heat, making the whole system very efficient. We can add Underfloor Heating to your central heating system by installing a manifold, thermostat, and pump. They will work with your current Boiler.
Electric Underfloor heating is cheaper to install than wet systems. However, it’s more expensive to run. Cables or mats with pre-installed cables are run under the floor and connected to the electrical system. Electrical systems can be set in the screed or laid directly underneath the flooring.
Both types of Underfloor Heating can be fitted into any home and work with any kind of flooring, including wood, carpet, tiles and vinyl. We also service and repair all types of Underfloor Heating. Issues are usually found in the above-ground components, like the manifold. When there’s a problem under the floor, we’ll detect it quickly with a thermal imaging camera.
Power Flushing
Powerflushing involves pumping chemicals through your system to remove any unwanted obstructions. A clear system provides the best, cheap heating. It protects your boiler, radiators, and pipes from corrosion and failure.
Power flushing clears debris within your central heating system. Debris is inevitable. Hot water produces limescale, which breaks away and settles in radiators. Rust particles are formed from the inside of radiators, combining with limescale to form debris commonly known as sludge. Sludge is like mud in your radiators, pipes, and Boiler, causing inefficient and expensive heat output.
As the years pass, the sludge becomes more noticeable. Radiators only partly heat, rooms are cold, and heating becomes more costly. Sludge is indicated by dirty water on the radiator bleeding. If you notice any of your radiators only getting hot from the middle or top upwards, then it’s time to consider a Power Flush.
Left alone, your heating efficiency will decrease, and central heating components will be at risk of blockage and even damage. An engineer will attach a Power Flush machine to your system. Over a few hours, water (mixed with chemicals) is gently pumped through the system. The chemicals will break down and dislodge all sludge and debris collected and removed.
The process is continued until your system is 100% clear. You’ll notice the difference instantly. Your system and all radiators will heat quickly. A Pwerflush lasts a long time. Corrosion inhibitors are added to the new water to help prevent sludge build-up in the future.
