Why Do Boilers Breakdown?
The Boiler is the hardest working appliance of any household during their lifetime of 10-15 years they work hard every day to supply you and your family with hot water and heat. As boilers age, they will inevitably breakdown.
Servicing your Boiler every year will help prevent boiler failure and will ensure your Boiler runs at optimal efficiency.
There are several faults that cause boiler failure. Here are the most common ones.
Boiler Continuously Switches Off
Low pressure is usually the cause if your Boiler keeps switching off our engineer will first attempt to repressurise your Boiler (a quick and simple procedure), so it runs at the correct pressure.
If this doesn’t solve the issue then the systems inspected for a blockage, any found are swiftly removed. A blockage present anywhere in the system or pump restricts water flow causing low pressure, thus the continuous switch offs.
Faulty pumps can also be the cause; the pump will be thoroughly inspected also.
Frozen Condensation Pipes
Boilers create wastewater which runs outside through a condensate pipe. In winter these pipes sometimes freeze and block stopping the Boiler from working. Frozen pipes are quickly defrosted, enabling your Boiler to work again. Freezing usually occurs because of poor/no insulation we’ll offer advice where this is the case.
The Thermocouple regulates the gas that enters the Boiler, keeping it running. If your pilot light keeps going out, then the thermocouple will likely need replacing, or there could be a problem with the gas supply itself. Both are checked and repaired/replaced and adjusted as necessary until your Boiler runs all the time.
After many years limescale and sludge can build up in your system pipes and boiler blocking water flow in the Boilers heat exchanger, causing it to overheat.
This is known as kettling which can destroy your heat exchanger and will cause your Boiler to fail. Loud noises coming from your system is a sign of kettling. Powerflushing your system will remove the build-up and preserve your heat exchanger before a replacement’s needed.
Leaking Boilers can still function but leaks must be rectified immediately on discovery. Leaks can cause your Boiler to short circuit (and stop working) and also damage other areas of your home.
Never ignore a leaking Boiler, leaks are usually down to worn seals (in the Boiler or pump) or faulty pressure valves (caused by to much pressure in the system).
Replacing seals and valves is a common and inexpensive Boiler Repair job. We sometimes find leaky pipework in and around boilers caused by incorrect fitting or corrosion.
Sometimes a Boilers working correctly and it’s the thermostat that’s causing the issues, older ones are at times inaccurate and sometimes don’t work at all. In this instance, all that’s needed is a simple thermostat replacement.
Radiators Not Heating Up
A build-up of air in your system will stop radiators from heating bleeding radiators will usually remedy this problem. A simple procedure which you can undertake yourself (or one of our engineers can do for you if you’re unsure). Check your radiators if they’re only getting hot at the bottom then there’s air in the system, bleed each radiator as necessary.
Radiators that are hot at the top but cold in the bottom and even middle is a sign of a sludge/debris build up in the system. A Powerflush will remove the build-up so your radiators can heat top to bottom.
Weird noises coming from your boiler or central heating system indicate a fault which could develop into a severe problem. Failing pumps, faulty valves, air and low pressure cause these strange noises. One of our engineers will quickly diagnose and rectify the issue.
Types Of Boiler We Repair
TM Hughes Gas Engineers repair all types of boiler and fuel types. These include Combi, System and Regular Boilers and Gas, LPG, Oil and Electricity fuel/energy types.
Combi Boilers are the least complicated to repair as they heat the water from the mains supply via a heating element. System Boilers utilise a cylinder and sometimes water tanks (vented systems) so repairs can be more complicated.
Older Basildon homes feature regular/traditional boilers which use more parts than modern Boilers and are more prone to breakdown. We can handle any Boiler, so whatever type you have we can help you.
Makes Of Boiler We Repair
Our Gas Safe Registered Worcester Bosch Accredited Engineers can repair any make of Boiler these include

How Much Does A Boiler Repair Cost?
As a small reputable local business, our prices are significantly lower than the big national companies and fair compared to other companies in the area.
The cost of repair will depend on the parts required, the type of boiler and the time it takes to repair. We will always establish a price first, so you know exactly what you’ll pay, there will be no hidden extras added on at the end of the job.
How To Prevent Boiler Breakdown
A Boiler that’s looked after is less likely to breakdown prevention is better than cure, and the best way to prevent Boiler Failure is to ensure any pipes in areas vulnerable to the cold are properly insulated (frozen pipes cause breakdowns) and have an annual Boiler Service.
An annual service will make sure all working parts are clean and in order, protect you and your family from carbon monoxide poisoning and validate your home insurance for Boiler breakdowns.
