Is It Time For A New Boiler?
You most likely have a Boiler, and it probably runs ok even though it may be a few years old now.
Several factors must be considered when establishing if you need a new Boiler fitted.
Energy Efficiency
The first is energy efficiency. Do you feel your fuel bills are too high?
Efficient Boilers are essential to keep your fuel bills reasonable as a Boiler accounts for around 60% of household energy spending.
Boilers gradually decrease in efficiency over time, and once they have expired the warranty period (7-12 years with most Boilers), they are most likely running at sub-optimal efficiency.
We fit modern condensing Boilers, which run at between 90-99% efficiency, depending on the type of Boiler fitted and the model.
Condensing Boilers catch escaping gasses and recycle them to heat hot water.
So if you have a 99% efficient Boiler, only 1 penny is wasted for every pound you spend.
Testing has shown old Boilers to run as low as 55% efficiency. So in this scenario, 45 pence is wasted for every £1 you spend on fuel.
Considering the Boiler accounts for the most significant chunk of a home’s energy spend, this is a colossal waste.
For example, if you had an old Boiler running at 55% efficiency and your annual energy bill is £2500, and your Boiler consumes 60% of that energy, your Boiler costs £1500 per year to run.
Now imagine that 45% of the fuel your Boiler consumes is wasted. That’s a waste of £675 per year!
If you have an inefficient old Boiler wasting £675 per year, a New Boiler will pay for itself within 2-3 years.
Expensive Repairs
If you have an old Boiler, you may be experiencing issues with it such as leaking, low pressure, pilot lights blowing out, continuous stopping etc.
Sometimes Boiler Repairs are straightforward and can be undertaken quickly at a reasonable price.
Other times the Boiler is uneconomical to repair and not worth doing as the Boiler’s too old.
It’s often the case that in repair situations, the money is better off going towards a new Boiler.
Have Your Heating & Hot Water Needs Changed?
Most Boilers last 10+ years which is a long time, and in this time, your heating and hot water requirements may have changed.
For example, you may have increased the size of your property with an extension (or planning to) to accommodate your growing family, in which case you need a larger water supply and more radiators. If your current Boiler and central heating system are not up to the increase, it will need upgrading.
On the other hand, your children may have grown up and moved out. As a result, you no longer need a big Boiler and a hot water storage cylinder. Instead, the system can be converted and fitted with a new Combi Boiler while removing the cylinder and water tanks for a smaller, more efficient system.
Boiler Replacements, Boiler Upgrades & New Systems
Whatever your Boiler needs, we will help you. The first step is to book a free, no-obligation survey and quote so we can establish your needs and offer you the best Boiler for your home at the best possible price.
Most of the Boiler installations we undertake in Romford are straightforward Boiler replacements which involve removing your old Boiler and fitting a new one of the same type.
The new Boiler will work with your existing central heating system. So, for example, if you already have a Combination Boiler that’s seen better days, we will remove it and fit a new Combi Boiler.
Straightforward Boiler replacements are swifter than Boiler Upgrades & New Systems.
Boiler upgrades are when we remove your old Boiler and fit a different type of Boiler in its place.
There are three Boiler types: ‘Combination’, ‘System’ and ‘Regular’. None are better than the other they all work differently and serve different purposes. (there’s more information about Boiler types below)
Sometimes, it’s necessary to change the Boiler type to increase hot water and radiator capacity or reduce waste and improve efficiency.
For example, we could remove an old regular Boiler along with the bulky water tanks and hot water storage cylinder.
A new combination Boiler is fitted, and the removal of the tanks and cylinders creates more space in the home.
The new combination Boiler is more efficient and costs less to run. In these situations, conversions are made to the central heating system to accept the new type of Boiler.
We also fit brand-new heating systems in either existing properties or new builds. The old system and Boiler are stripped out and replaced with a modern Boiler, pipes, controls, pumps and cylinder (if applicable), creating a new energy-efficient central heating system.
Boiler Types & Sizes
The first thing to establish is the best fuel to use that’s available at your property. Most homes in Romford are connected to the gas grid, so Gas is the most common type of Boiler we fit in the area. Electricity, Oil and LPG are alternatives to Gas.
Next, we will decide the best type of Boiler for your property and the heating and hot water requirements.
There are three types of Boilers.
Combination Boilers
Combination Boilers heat water instantly and send it directly to your hot water taps and radiators. A simple system that doesn’t require a hot water cylinder or tanks. Combination Boilers are fitted in small to medium-sized homes.
System Boilers
System boilers include a hot water cylinder, which ensures an ample hot water supply that serves more than one bathroom/hot tap at a time. If the Boiler breaks down, the cylinder can still heat water (as long as an immersion heater is fitted). System Boilers are fitted into medium and large homes.
Regular Boilers
Regular boilers are found in older central heating systems that use water tanks and a water cylinder. Regular Boilers have primarily been replaced by modern combination and system Boilers but are still fitted in homes with older-style central heating systems. Regular Boiler systems work best in the largest of properties.
Boiler Sizes
All types of Boilers are available in multiple sizes. The Boiler must be powerful enough to supply all the hot taps, showers and radiators of a home but not too powerful that energy efficiency is compromised.
Therefore, the correct size Boiler must be fitted to serve your daily needs without wasting money.
Small Boilers
Small Boilers, typically 24-30 kW, are suitable for apartments or smaller homes with one bathroom and fewer radiators. They are designed to provide adequate heating and hot water without wasting energy, making them cost-effective and efficient for smaller spaces.
Medium Boilers
Medium-sized Boilers, usually between 30-35 kW, are ideal for medium-sized homes with two to three bedrooms and multiple radiators. These Boilers can handle a higher demand for hot water and heating, ensuring consistent comfort throughout the home.
Large Boilers
Large Boilers, ranging from 35 kW and above, are necessary for larger homes with four or more bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, and extensive radiator networks. These Boilers deliver high performance, ensuring that all parts of the home receive adequate heating and hot water supply simultaneously.
Boiler Controls
New controls are available with Boiler Installations. They include:
Programmable Thermostats
Programmable thermostats are a cornerstone of modern Boiler control systems. These devices allow homeowners to set specific temperature schedules for different times of the day and week. For example, you can set the thermostat to lower the temperature while asleep or away at work and raise it just before you wake up or return home.
This level of customisation ensures your home is always at a comfortable temperature when you need it and significantly reduces energy consumption during periods when high temperatures aren’t necessary. Many programmable thermostats offer multiple daily settings, allowing even more refined control over your home’s heating patterns.
Smart Thermostats
Smart thermostats represent the cutting edge of Boiler control technology. These internet-connected devices go beyond simple scheduling, offering a range of advanced features. They can be set remotely via smartphone apps, allowing you to control your home’s temperature from anywhere.
Many smart thermostats also incorporate learning algorithms that analyse your daily routines and automatically adjust heating patterns for optimal comfort and efficiency. Some advanced models can even communicate directly with compatible Boilers to modulate their output, potentially leading to significant energy savings.
Additionally, smart thermostats often provide detailed energy usage reports, helping you understand and optimise your heating habits.
Room Thermostats
Room thermostats are the simplest and most familiar type of boiler control. These devices monitor the temperature in a specific room (usually a central living area) and signal the Boiler to turn on or off to maintain the desired temperature.
While basic in principle, modern room thermostats can offer features like digital displays, touch controls, and compatibility with other smart home systems. Some advanced models even incorporate humidity sensors to provide a more comprehensive measure of comfort.
While not as sophisticated as other control options, a well-placed room thermostat will maintain comfort and efficiency in all homes.
