Do You Have An Old Boiler?
As boilers age, they lose their efficiency, costing more and more to run.
As boilers become less efficient, fuel wastage increases by up to 45% in some cases. It costs over £300 for most households.
New condensing boilers run between 90% and 99% efficiency, representing a big savings for households with old boilers.
A typical Brentwood 3-bedroom semi-detached home can save up to £580 a year by installing a new boiler.
What are Your Boiler & Central Heating System Requirements?
There are many different types of boilers available on the market
When installing a new boiler, consider your existing central heating system or the one you have installed.
If you choose the wrong boiler type or size, you’ll be stuck with a boiler that won’t serve you well.
For example, it won’t meet your family’s needs if it’s too small, and you’ll be frustrated with the lack of hot water.
Too large and you waste energy and, of course, money
Always have a survey done by an experienced gas engineer who’ll consider every variable (property size, number of radiators, existing system, etc.).
A survey allows an engineer to determine the best type, size, make and fuel type of boiler for your home.
So you get the perfect boiler that’ll give you many years of satisfying service.
Condensing Boilers
All Boilers fitted by TM Hughes & Son are condensing boilers
Here’s why
When combustible materials are burnt for fuel, waste occurs. The excess is expelled through the flue (to stop you from being poisoned by carbon dioxide).
Old non-condensing boilers let the excess fuel escape, which was the norm until the condensing boiler was invented.
The condensing boiler extracts heat from expelled gases, which is then used to heat water. Thus, condensing boilers are much more efficient than old boiler designs.
As time passed, heating technologies improved, and condensers became more efficient.
Since 2005, all new boilers in UK homes must be condensing boilers. They are much better for the environment than old-style boilers, and we only install condensing Boilers.
Condensing boilers are pricier than old-style boilers. But, the money saved on heating bills makes up for the purchase cost.
Are Condensing Boilers Prone To Breakdown In Freezing Weather?
Condensing boilers utilise a condensate pipe that runs outside.
The pipes can freeze in freezing weather, stopping the boiler from working; this isn’t a cause for concern.
- Insulate the condensate pipe, and it won’t freeze in the first place
- Defrosting frozen pipes is pretty simple anyway
The Three Types Of Boiler We Install
System Boilers
Water heated by system boilers is circulated through radiators to heat your home. Hot water is stored in a cylinder with hot water taps and showers.
Unlike regular boilers, the system boiler doesn’t require tanks, saving on loft space.
However, system boilers require an expansion tank, a small vessel that sits above the hot water storage cylinder.
System boilers are generally easy to install, even with existing central heating systems.
The pressurised cylinder means you’ll always have hot water when needed and will always have satisfactory pressure. The size of your storage cylinder will depend on your hot water use.
Cylinders on both system and regular boilers can be fitted with immersion heaters. If the boiler ever fails, switch the immersion on for hot water.
Regular Boilers
Regular boilers are the oldest design of them all, sometimes referred to as conventional boilers.
Many older Brentwood homes have a regular system installed. However, in the past couple of decades, regular boiler installations have become less common due to the rise of modern systems and combi boilers.
A regular boiler utilises various working parts. Two tanks are needed in the loft: a storage tank and a feed expansion tank to supply the boiler and a vented water cylinder to store the hot water.
Gravity supplies hot water; a central heating pump keeps the water circulating in the radiators.
Regular Boilers Ideal For Large Homes
Regular boilers are useful for larger homes, as the cylinder has a constant hot water supply. Multiple taps and showers can be used simultaneously, with constant pressure and hot water for everybody.
Regular systems require more parts and take longer to fit than other systems, making them more expensive.
The tanks and cylinders take up space, which is not an issue if you live in a large home. If you have an existing regular system, replacing the boiler and leaving the system as it is is cost-effective.
A combi boiler can be installed in small homes with an old regular system. It will remove the cylinder and water tanks, creating extra space.
Combi Boilers
Combination boilers are compact and highly energy efficient. They take up little room and don’t require a cylinder or water tanks.
Combi’s heat water instantly on demand for your taps and central heating system.
Combi boilers are now the most popular type of boiler fitted in the UK.
Turn on your hot water tap.
The combi boiler detects water flow, activating a heating element that heats the water as it flows through.
Combi Boilers Are Usually The Best Choice For Small Homes
- No storage cylinder means you only heat the water you use
- Fewer parts are needed for Combi boilers, so they’re usually the fastest and cheapest type of boiler installation
- As there are fewer parts required, space is saved
However, the pressure will only be as good as your main pressure. If you have good mains pressure, you’ll be okay. If not, you might want to consider another boiler style.
Another thing to consider is that you can only run one hot tap bath or shower at a time, which is okay if you have one bathroom.
The combi boiler (storage cylinder) does not have a backup hot water supply. If your boiler breaks down, you’ll be without hot water until it is repaired.
Boiler Fuel Types
Gas
Most homes in Brentwood are connected to the gas grid. Therefore, most boilers we install are gas.
All gas boilers are condensing boilers, regular, combi and system.
Gas is widely used in the UK as fuel as it’s around three times cheaper than electricity.
Electricity
Electric boilers are an option for homes off the gas grid. Utilising a heating element that heats water on demand (like a gas combi boiler does)
Electric boilers are efficient as there’s near-zero wastage.
Easy to install and maintain, and there’s no risk of carbon monoxide poisoning either.
Electric boilers are around 3-4 times more expensive than gas boilers.
Oil
Popular with the countryside homes on the outskirts of Brentwood, oil is a cheaper alternative to electricity.
Boilers work much the same as gas boilers, which are combustible fuel appliances.
A storage tank is needed to store the oil, which must be topped up when it gets to the bottom. If it runs out of oil, there will be no heat. Unlike gas or electricity, the oil must be manually delivered.
We also fit LPG Boilers.
Makes Of Boiler
Many boiler makes are available in the UK at various price ranges. The make of the boiler you choose for your home may depend on your budget, as some brands are more expensive than others. Quality also varies between brands.

Always speak to a qualified Gas Safe registered boiler installer before buying a boiler.
We offer Brentwood residents a free, no-obligation survey. One of our gas-safe registered engineers will come to your property at a convenient time to survey your system. They will discuss options for your new boiler and any changes you want to your current system.
We can simply remove your existing boiler and put a new one to work with your existing central heating system. This is the most common option as it’s usually the easiest and cheapest.
New Boilers can include the latest smart controls and thermostatic radiator valves. They will accompany your new boiler installation. If not, we can design and fit one for you.
