Our prices are among Maldon’s best, and there are no call-out charges or hidden extras. We take on jobs of all sizes.
Your plumber will always arrive on time for the job. They will complete the task well, clean up, and leave your property as found.
Bathroom Installation
Multiple skilled craftsmen build a good bathroom. That’s why the TM Hughes Bathroom Installation team has experienced and certified plumbers. They also have heating engineers, electricians, and tilers. They have installed many bathrooms in Maldon over the years.
We offer free, no-obligation surveys and quotes for bathroom installation. Our bathroom fitter can visit your home, measure up, and discuss your options. Some customers know exactly how they want to design and build their bathroom, while others want to see what’s possible.
Everyone has unique bathroom needs. We design bathrooms around your requirements. If you have young children, we can install the best non-slip flooring.
We can build your bathroom according to your design or show you multiple options for suites, flooring, wall coverings, lights, and fittings.
Many looks are possible. These include classic Victorian, minimal Scandinavian, industrial, and beach house styles. Each unique look is achieved with suite shapes, wall and flooring materials, and colours.
Radiators are matched to fit your design or eliminated and replaced with underfloor heating. Lighting can make or break the look of any bathroom. Carefully placed lighting sets the overall mood. Furniture, fixtures, and fittings finish off the look of bathrooms. They are placed properly for the best functionality and usability.
Domestic Plumbing
Toilets
We not only unblock Toilets but also install and repair them. We can also help if your cistern is continually filling, your toilet must be flushed repeatedly, or it is not flushing. All Toilets work the same way and can be repaired swiftly.
Our plumbers install all toilet types. If you have a traditional bathroom and want a classic close-coupled toilet, we can install it. If you have a modern bathroom and want a square wall-hung toilet, we can install that, too.
Showers
Shower installation, replacement, and repair are part of our plumbing services. We can install and repair any shower. This includes Mixer Showers, which use water from the hot and cold supply; electric Showers, which use the cold supply; and power showers, which use the hot and cold supply with a pump to boost the pressure. If you’re having pump problems, we can cure them or install new pumps where needed.
For those who want to save on water and energy bills, we can fit an Eco shower that uses 50% more water than regular mixer showers. Electric and Mixer Eco showers are available. We’ll ensure the best one for your bathroom is fitted for maximum energy efficiency.
A Thermostatic shower is the best bet for residents with children. It always maintains the set ratio of hot and cold water, eliminating the risk of scalding. The most convenient showers we fit are digital showers. They have separate control panels (wired or wireless) that work as a remote control. They let you avoid entering a cold shower and waiting for it to warm up.
We fix common shower issues. These include leaking heads, temperature swings, low pressure, cold water, and no water.
Taps
Taps in both the kitchen and bathroom can be repaired or replaced. Most kitchens will have mixer taps connected to the hot and cold water supply, allowing mixing to obtain the ideal temperature. Traditional Pillar Taps can be found in both the Kitchen and Bathroom, while Monobloc taps are common in bathrooms.
You should install whatever taps you want to work on with flexible hoses. They let you shut off the tap without shutting off the whole water supply.
We always supply and fit flexible hoses with new tap installations. All taps use one of four mechanisms: Ball, Cartridge, Disc or Washer. All Tap mechanisms wear out, eventually causing constant (and annoying dripping). We carry tap mechanisms in stock and can quickly repair any worn tap. We have any taps that are beyond repair and can replace them quickly.
Saniflo Systems
Whatever your requirements, your friendly Maldon Plumber will meet them. Toilets no longer have to be limited to the bath or cloakroom. We can install them anywhere you want—in a cupboard, garage, or the loft—anywhere possible with a Saniflo system.
A Saniflo sits behind a toilet and uses blades to cut down waste into fine particles, which are pumped through thin pipes directly into the sewer. Saniflos will work with other appliances, such as dishwashers, washing machines, and showers. They let you install what you want where you want.
Kitchen Appliances
Kitchen Appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines, can be fitted. Our plumber will connect them to the water supply. They will be at the right level and without leaks. They will run properly and without problems.
Waste Disposal Units
We also fit and repair Waste Disposal Units under the kitchen sink. These Units use little energy; they grind food into fine waste and flush it into the sewer. They are also very green, clean, and easy appliances. They handle food waste.
Heating Services
We offer heating services to homeowners, landlords, tenants, and Maldon business owners. All our plumbers are gas-safe registered engineers. They are skilled in heating installation, repair, servicing, and optimization. This ensures your central heating system runs at its best.
New heating installations, services, and repairs combined with the correct setting ensure maximal efficiency and lower fuel bills.
Heating Systems We Cover
We work on Gas, Electric, and LPG heating systems. Maldon homes use Gas, a cheap and environmentally friendly fuel, to power their central heating systems. Homes on the outskirts, away from the gas line, rely on electricity or LPG. Whatever your fuel type, we can help you.
The Central Heating System
The Boiler is the most complicated part of the central heating system. We offer a range of boiler services, including installation, upgrade, service, and repair for all types and makes of Boiler, including Alpha, Ariston, Baxi, Ferolli, Glow-worm, Grundfos, Heat-line, Ideal, Keston, Potterton, Saunier Duval, Vaillant, Viessman, and Vokera.
Your Boiler heats water from the mains supply and distributes it through pipes around your home. Heated water is used for hot taps, showers, radiators, and underfloor heating pipes.
Boilers come in different sizes and types. The type of Boiler you have depends on the size of your home. It is based on available space, your existing central heating system, and hot water needs.
Boiler Types
Combination Boilers
Combi boilers are very popular compared to other boilers. They are quick and easy to install and take up the least amount of space. No hot water storage (water cylinder) is required for a combi boiler, as the water is heated instantly. Combi Boilers are the number one choice for smaller homes and feature in many medium-sized dwellings.
System Boilers
While Combi Boilers work well for many homes, larger homes often require hot water at separate points simultaneously. A Combi can’t meet the demands of family households. In this situation, a system Boiler that utilises a pressurised cylinder is preferred. System Boilers heat water stored in the cylinder, so a plentiful hot water supply is always available.
Regular Boilers
Traditional systems use a Regular Boiler. They have a Feed and expansion tank, storage cylinder, and central heating pump. In recent years, this complex network of parts has made way for modern and combi boiler systems.
We still install regular boilers when upgrading old systems or installing systems for the first time in the largest homes. Regular Boilers are excellent for supplying constant hot water to multiple taps.
Setting A Central Heating System
All central heating systems have various working parts, which must be set correctly to work in unison for the best efficiency. These systems include boilers, pipes, pumps, radiators, radiator valves, controls, water heaters, and cylinders.
When you use TM Hughes & Son for installation, upgrade, service, or repair, we can check and adjust all other parts of your central heating system, ensuring that you get the most out of it.
Controls
Central heating controls must be set correctly to get your desired heat in each room at the correct times. We find many poorly set controls, which lead to excess energy wastage (and money). We often hear complaints about individual rooms being too hot or cold.
The thermostat, programmer and cylinder thermostat must be in good working order. Old and inaccurate controls will lead to erroneous heating.
Thermostatic Valves
Older systems have manual valves on the radiators. Heating a room accurately with old radiator valves can be challenging, so consider upgrading. Thermostatic valves allow the temperature of each room to be set accurately.
We can upgrade old valves on your old radiators or upgrade both. If you already have thermostatic valves, one of our engineers can set them correctly or fix them if they become ‘stuck’. A common problem that’s easily remedied.
Pressure
Central heating systems must run at the correct pressure. Boilers run at between 1 and 1.5 bar. The pressure is checked when a boiler is installed, repaired, or serviced. Some old central heating systems may be unable to cope with the stress of a system boiler and pressurised cylinder. In this case, we may fit a combi boiler or a regular boiler. Our engineers have the expertise to determine the correct pressure for any given system.
Pumps
Pumps are found in boilers, central heating systems, and shower systems. We offer a full pump installation, upgrade, and repair service for these systems.
Pumps are usually one of the first items to fail on a system as they work hard continuously daily. However, they are straightforward to replace. If you’re having pump trouble, we’ll diagnose the issue and repair or replace it as necessary.
Boiler Installation
Boilers are important purchases. Installing the best one for your home and your budget is essential. We offer free, no-obligation boiler surveys for the residents of Maldon. Our safe gas engineers have been installing boilers in the area for many years. They can help if you’re considering a new boiler.
Once your Boiler gets over ten years old, it’s highly recommended that you consider an upgrade. You may already be having problems. Or, you may have noticed your boilers becoming less efficient at heating your home (higher bills show this). As boilers age, they lose efficiency and are more likely to break down. Parts are hard to obtain for old boilers, and some are so unsafe they’re condemned.
We make Boiler installation easy and can do straight upgrades. Your old Boiler has been replaced with a new one (of the same type) that works with your existing central heating system.
Hot water and heating requirements change for some households. You may want more hot water storage, or you may want to free up storage space by removing tanks and cylinders. We can upgrade your central heating system to work with a different type of Boiler. We are Worcester Bosch accredited engineers who fit all makes and types of boilers.
A free survey will establish your needs and allow us to write a free, no-obligation quote.
Boiler Repair
We repair all types and makes of Boiler. If your Boiler ever breaks down, you want it fixed ASAP. No one likes going without hot water and heating, especially in the colder months. We get called out in winter more than any other time of year to repair Boilers. If you need a repair, call us, and we’ll aim to get an engineer out to you within a couple of hours.
As long as we have the parts, we can quickly repair boilers. Most of the time, a replacement part is all that’s needed. We carry common boiler parts which enable a swift repair. Otherwise, we’ll obtain the parts quickly and, in most instances, have your Boiler working the same day.
Protect yourself from Boiler failure by having an annual service (see below). If you’re experiencing any faults with your Boiler, have them looked out for before they cause a breakdown. What is a fault? The noises are loud and uncommon. The pilot lights keep going out. The boiler keeps switching off. It also has frozen condensate pipes. Be sure to insulate outside pipes connected to your boiler. Our engineers are happy to correct any faults you may be experiencing.
We repair all types and makes of Boiler. Our services include no call-out charges.
Boiler Servicing
Servicing your Boiler ensures it will run smoothly and efficiently and adds protection from breakdown. TM Hughes boiler services are quick, efficient, and reasonably priced compared to other companies in Maldon.
For the best results, Boiler servicing should be carried out annually. Registered gas engineers undertake all servicing. They do it according to your boiler maker’s specifications, and a set procedure covers all parts of the Boiler.
During the service, all seals and pipework are checked for leaking. Where seals are worn, or pipework is loose, corrections are made. The pressures and gas burner are checked. We’ll run checks to ensure all safety devices are functioning correctly so your Boiler won’t suffer damage in the event of failure.
The gas rate and flues are tested to ensure all exhaust gases are removed and there’s no risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. The Boiler is switched on once the service is complete, and all radiators are bled to ensure everything is working properly.
Servicing validates home breakdown cover if you have it. It allows your boiler to run as best as possible. However, service only partly affects how efficient your boiler is. Efficiency depends on its age, type, and condition.
Powerflushing
Powerflushing cleans the whole central heating system. It covers the boiler, pipes, radiators, pump, and valves. It will ensure that your system runs efficiently. Powerflushing should be done every five years (ideally every time you replace an old boiler).
Central heating systems produce limescale and rust. Limescale is inevitable where water is heated and left standing, and central heating systems are prime producers. Limescale breaks away and circulates the system. Most will settle in the pipes and radiators. Other larger parts may even get stuck in places (and, in extreme cases, can cause boiler failure).
The inside radiators rust. The rust breaks away and settles in the pipes and radiators’ bottoms. Eventually, the limescale and rust form a mud-like substance known as sludge. Sludge prevents central heating systems from heating optimally. Dirty water and radiators that only heat at the top, middle, and top (not at the bottom or bottom and middle) are indicators of sludge.
Powerflushing removes sludge. A machine is attached to the central heating system. The machine gently pumps chemicals diluted with water around the system until clear. Old water will be removed and replaced with new treated water that will help prevent sludge build-up in the future. Once your system has been flushed, your radiators will never feel hotter, and you should also enjoy lower fuel bills.
Underfloor Heating
The ultimate type of central heating is underfloor Heating. This system uses little energy, needs little maintenance, and heats each part of a room evenly. Everyone loves the feeling of a warm floor, especially when it’s cold outside. Underfloor Heating allows for the removal of radiators, freeing up space.
TM Hughes & Son installs, upgrades, services, and repairs wet and electric Underfloor Heating. Wet systems connect to your existing boiler and heating system, while electric systems are wired into the mains. Your chosen type will depend on your budget and the existing central heating system. While electricity is cheaper to install, it’s more expensive to run.
Underfloor Heating is the number one choice for newly built homes, extensions, and renovations. Systems can be fitted into homes of any age and floor type. Some systems are screeded into new floors. Others are fitted between floorboards or laid under flooring. The flooring can be carpet, tile, vinyl, or stone. Underfloor Heating works with most types of flooring.
Do you need your existing Underfloor Heating serviced or repaired? We can replace old parts on existing systems, such as manifolds and valves. We can also check your system to ensure everything is working properly. If your system develops a fault under the floor, we can quickly establish any thermal imaging camera problems.
Gas Safety Inspections & Certificates
We inspect gas for safety. We give landlords CP12 gas safety certificates. We can also issue electrical certificates if required. When landlords let properties, they must have checks. The checks ensure that gas appliances are safe for tenants. This is as outlined in the Gas Safety Installation and Use Regulations 1998.
The process is usually straightforward. A gas-safe registered engineer visits your property conveniently for you and your tenant. All gas appliances are visually inspected for safety. Flues and chimneys are tested, and the main gas supply is checked. The inspection confirms that Gas is burned and expelled correctly. So, there’s no risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Also, all safety devices work.
If any issues are found, they can be rectified there and then or later, depending on the issues and how severe they are. If necessary, we’ll provide a quote for any repairs. Once everything passes and is deemed safe, certificates are written. Show the certificate to your letting agent, tenants, and insurers to verify your property’s safety and legality to rent.
Gas safety inspections must happen every 12 months or when a new tenant moves in. We’ll send you a reminder before the certificate expires so you can ensure you’re always covered.
Gas Fire Servicing
Gas Fires are a desirable living room accessory, providing much-needed extra heat in winter. As a fuel-burning appliance, gas fires should be serviced every 12 months. Servicing is highly recommended before the cold months start and your fire is used daily.
Some homeowners neglect their fires and rarely get them serviced. Fires become difficult to light, exhibit soot stains on the exterior, or start smoking. These are all signs that your fire could use a service and is potentially dangerous. Please consider if you’re noticing symptoms or haven’t had a service in the last year.
A service allows your fire to run efficiently and safely, greatly reducing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. We service all types of gas fires, chimneys, and flues. We remove all internal parts, like the burner unit and catalyst. We clean them well. This makes them work better than ever. Gas pressures are tested, and we’ll examine the chimney/flue output to ensure all excess gasses are removed.
Carbon monoxide alarms should accompany gas fires. We’ll check your alarm and position during the service. If an alarm isn’t present, we’ll recommend one. Once the service’s completed, we’ll write a service record. (please note we only service gas fires. We don’t undertake repairs).
Gas Cooker Services
Gas cookers, hobs and ovens are a popular choice in Maldon kitchens. A clean, energy-efficient fuel that allows accurate heat control and distribution. Gas-safe registered engineers must be used when removing old gas cookers or fitting new ones. We make gas cooker replacement quick and easy with our connection & disconnection service.
We fit all gas cooker types, including standard Gas, LPG, gas range cookers, built-in gas ovens, dual fuel cookers, gas hobs, and built-in gas hobs. Your old cookers will be disconnected, and your new cookers will be unpacked and connected to the gas supply. Once in place, we’ll test your cooker according to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure it’s working properly.
The hob area must be clear from obstructions such as cabinets and smoke alarms. Any extractor fans must be at a suitable height. We’ll also check that everything is in order so the installation adheres to safety regulations. You must show records that prove a Gas Safe engineer fitted your cookers. This is usually required.
Leak Detection
Uncover hidden leaks with TM Hughes & Son’s leak detection services.
Our advanced acoustic machines detect subtle sounds, and our thermal imaging cameras detect temperature changes. They find them in underground pipes, hidden pipes, and central heating systems, revealing leaks that are otherwise invisible.
This new approach finds leaks without causing disruption. It keeps your property safe from water damage.

Air Conditioning
Our services include air conditioning installation, servicing, and repair.
Installation starts with a survey. This establishes your property size and needs and helps select the best AC system for your property and budget.
Annual servicing ensures your system’s performance, efficiency, and longevity. It also allows us to identify and address any underlying issues.
We offer same-day visits and no call-out charges for air conditioning repairs.
We cover all air conditioning systems, including split, multi-split, and central systems. Our air con services extend to both residential and commercial buildings.
Plumbing & Gas Emergencies
Some emergencies are more severe than others. A Frozen Pipe can cause a burst pipe that can flood your home, potentially creating thousands of pounds of damage. Blockages can put your Toilet, Bath, Shower, and Sink out of action and cause flooding. Boiler Failure will leave you without hot water and heating, which is highly unpleasant, especially in the depths of winter.
One of our Maldon-based Plumbers can be at your home within 2 hours at any time of the day or night. There are no call-out charges, and we charge good rates, so you know you’ll not be overcharged.
In the event of a Plumbing Emergency, call us immediately. We’ll send a Plumber to you ASAP, whether the emergency concerns a domestic or commercial property. We’ll also tell you what to do over the phone to limit the damage.
Frozen & Burst Pipes
In the depths of winter, exposed uninsulated pipes can freeze. Pipes outside and in the loft are most at risk. Make sure your pipes are insulated. Insulation is the best protection against freezing. It’s easy to buy and easy to fit. We can insulate your pipes for those who are not into DIY.
Symptoms of frozen pipes include slow-running taps, frost on pipes, and weird smells coming from your tap or drain. Frozen pipes need defrosting immediately, but won’t they defrost independently? Yes, they will, but the longer the pipes are frozen, the more the frozen water will expand. Expanded frozen water inside a pipe will eventually cause it to burst. When the pipe defrosts, water will leak, causing damage in the process.
The worst types of leaks are ones in the loft. Voids will fill with water and eventually burst like balloons, flooding your home. You can quickly catch these types of leaks by noticing drips from the ceiling. In the event of a leak, wherever it’s coming from, shut off your water supply at the main stopcock.
The mains stopcock controls the water entering your home from the mains supply outside. It’s usually in the kitchen, but sometimes elsewhere. Make sure you know where it’s located, and make sure it works. Some have been left open for a long time and are seized. If this is the case, one of our plumbers can release or replace it with a new one. Leaks coming through the ceiling are usually caused by pipes supplying a water tank in the loft; the water tank will also have a stopcock shut this off.
Blockages
Blockages occur mainly in Toilets and Drains. Toilet pans filling up (and even worse, spilling over) and slow draining indicates an obstruction. The drains in your sink, bathroom basin, bath and shower can become clogged with debris such as food and hair. If you notice gurgling or foul smells coming from the drains, your pipes are obstructed somewhere and need clearing.
There are two blockages: full, where no water will pass, or partial blockages, where water will pass slowly. A full blockage is more urgent as it puts your toilet, shower, bath or sinks out of action (unless you want to flood your home). You get away with a partial blockage for so long. Eventually, it will block fully and need the attention of an emergency Plumber, but there is no need to worry. Our team can deal with any blockages you have quickly and cleanly.
Boiler Failure
Boiler Failure commonly occurs with old and neglected boilers. All boilers should be serviced once a year, protecting you from Boiler breakdown and Carbon Monoxide poisoning. An annual service will also make your Boiler run as efficiently as possible, saving you money. TM Hughes Boiler Servicing is among the cheapest in Maldon, and you will get a full, thorough boiler service that conforms to Gas Safe procedures.
If your boiler fails, you’ll be left without hot water and heating. All our plumbers are gas-safe engineers. They will get your boiler working quickly. We carry most parts in stock for Boiler repairs, and parts we don’t have, we can source the same day. We work on all types of Boiler, whatever the brand. These include Worcester Bosch (we are accredited installers). They include Vaillant, Baxi, Potterton, and Glow-Worm, to name a few.
Time for a New Boiler? We regularly install new Boilers in the area. A new Boiler will give you a warmer, cosier home with optimal energy efficiency, leading to cheaper gas bills. Let us know if you want a free, no-obligation quote for a new Boiler. Also, please note that we can offer up to a 10-year warranty on some Boilers we install.
Carbon Monoxide
Most Maldon homes use fuel-burning appliances for heat. This means they are at risk from carbon monoxide poisoning. Homes must have Carbon Monoxide Alarms fitted. Carbon Monoxide can kill, and the only way to detect it is with an alarm that will beep loudly if Carbon monoxide is present.
Alarms can be purchased cheaply from most DIY shops and fitted yourself, or one of our engineers can supply and fit alarms for you. Don’t leave anything to chance. Protect yourself and your family.
Improved Gas Appliance technology and regulations have made Carbon Monoxide leaks rare. Skilled Gas engineers also play a key role, thanks to the Gas Safe Register. However, there are still 25 deaths every year in the UK, which is too many. Evacuate yourself and your family from your home if your Carbon Monoxide Alarm starts beeping, and call us.
Do not leave your home until we have checked your appliances and, tested your home and given you the all-clear. If anyone experiences nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headaches, or confusion, call an ambulance immediately.
Gas Leaks
Gas Leaks are another potentially fatal occurrence of smelling Gas. Turn off your Gas Supply now. Don’t turn on any appliances. Open all windows and doors if possible. Leave your home and call us. Don’t return to your home until we have checked your Gas Supply and okayed it.
