Protect Yourself From Gas Price Increases With A New Condensing Boiler
The older Boilers become, the less efficient they are. The less efficient a Boiler is, the more it costs to run, the reason being they end up wasting more of the fuel burned.
Boiler studies have shown that old Boilers can run as low as 55% efficiency, where 45% of the fuel consumed is wasted.
A few hundred pounds a year for most households, and the wastage cost will only increase in this age of soaring energy costs.
We install condensing Boilers which are very efficient, between 90-99%, depending on the make and model of the Boiler you have installed.
Modern condensing Boilers capture escaping heat and reuse it to heat water, so you don’t need to burn as much gas, a significant saving if your current Boiler is old and inefficient.
The savings in your energy bill help pay for your new Boiler. In addition, the energy savings could pay for the Boiler itself over 5+ years. (This would, of course, depend on your current Boiler, condition, energy efficiency and the new Boiler you have installed).
As Boilers age, they are also sometimes not worth repairing. Boiler repair costs are occasionally straightforward and cost-effective. Other times, the prices are so significant you’re better off putting the money towards a new Boiler.
A New Boiler Could Better Suit Your Current Heating & Hot Water Requirements
Over the years, we have found homes with Boilers and central heating systems that don’t match the homeowner’s heating and hot water requirements.
Either the Boiler and central heating system is over gunned capable of providing more hot water than is needed, wasting space and money in gas bills.
Or the Boiler is underpowered and fails to provide enough heat to all the radiators and serve the bathrooms with enough hot water.
It’s common for householders’ heating and hot water requirements to change over time.
For example
Your children have grown up and left home, and you have an old regular system complete with a storage cylinder and water tanks. A modern combi boiler would be more efficient and eliminate the need for a storage cylinder and water tanks, increasing spare space.
Or
Your family grows, and you may even extend your home. Unfortunately, your old combi boiler and central heating system are not up to serving multiple bathrooms simultaneously. A system Boiler with a pressurised hot water storage cylinder would better serve you and your family.
How To Determine The Best Boiler For Your Unique Needs
Boiler’s come in different types and sizes to work with different kinds of central heating systems, fuels, and homes.
The best Boiler for your home will depend on…
- The amount of hot water you use
- The number of bathrooms in your home
- The number of radiators in your home
- Your current Boiler
- Your current central heating system
- The fuel available at your home
- Your budget
Boiler selection is essential. Once installed, you’ll rely on it for 10+ years, so it must be the correct Boiler for your home to ensure it meets your needs and you don’t waste money on the Boiler purchase or excess fuel.
Hot Water Usage
Heated water from the Boiler serves your hot taps, showers, radiators and underfloor heating pipes.
Your hot water usage is determined by the number of people in your home, number of hot taps, number of bathrooms and number of radiators or heated underfloor rooms.
Your Current Boiler & Central Heating System
An experienced Boiler engineer will consider the above factors, which will indicate if your current Boiler is up to the job, underpowered or too powerful.
If your Boiler size and type work for your requirements, then a new Boiler of the same type and size can be fitted to work with your already installed central heating system.
Otherwise, if you need to increase or decrease your capacity, a larger or smaller Boiler of the same type may work.
If not, a different type of Boiler may be required along with conversion to your existing central heating system.
Alternatively, if your central heating system is old, you may want a new boiler and a new central heating system.
The Different Types Of Boilers Include
Combination Boilers – Heat water instantly, have all components fitted within and don’t require cylinders or water tanks—ideal for small to medium-sized homes.
System Boilers – Work in conjunction with a pressurised hot water cylinder for a larger hot water supply. Suitable for medium to large-sized homes.
Regular Boilers – A gravity-fed system utilising unpressured cylinder and water tanks to supply continuous hot water. Best for the largest of properties.
Boiler Sizes
All the above Boilers come in various sizes ranging from 24-40 kW (the measure of power)
- Smaller homes with up to ten radiators require a 24 to 27 kW boiler
- Mediumhomes with 10-15 radiators need a 28 to 32 kW boiler
- Large homes with 15+ radiators need a 35 to 40 kW boiler
Available Fuel
Most homes in Hockley use gas to power their Boilers. However, if your home is not connected to the gas grid, alternative fuels include electricity, LPG and Oil.
Generally, we fit Boilers of the same fuel type when replacing Boilers. However, a fuel type will be picked when installing brand new central heating systems.
Gas is always the first choice as it’s readily available, green and cheap.
Electricity Boilers will work in all types of homes but will work out more expensive than gas to run.
Oil and LPG are an alternative to gas for homes off the grid, but they require oil storage tanks or LPG bottles, and the fuel needs delivering and topping up.
If Oil or LPG runs out, you’re left without heating and hot water until the delivery arrives.
Your Budget
The Boiler you install will also depend on your budget. All boiler manufacturers offer Boilers of varying price ranges.
As a general rule of thumb, the more you spend, the more efficient the Boiler is and will include a longer guarantee.
