Welcome to TM Hughes & Son. We are Bathroom Design & Installation specialists based in South Woodham Ferrers.
We have fitted many bathrooms in the town over the past 30 years and have an experienced team who are experts in all Bathroom design and installation disciplines.
If you require a new bathroom, we would like you to meet our bathroom designer, who will undertake a free survey and write you a free no-obligation quote.
During the survey, our bathroom designer will measure your Bathroom, analyse the space and present you with all the possible options.
We can build any bathroom of any design and style to your precise specifications.
The bathroom installation is planned carefully to a specific timeframe to ensure little disruption to your home life while the work’s carried out.
Your finished Bathroom will look amazing while performing well every day for many years after the installation.
Designing & Building Your Bathroom
When designing and building your Bathroom, we split everything into three parts, so your Bathroom is designed and built, covering all aspects from when the Bathroom is stripped bare to when the finishing touches are added.
- Plumbing, Electrical & Heating
- Flooring & Walls
- Fixtures & Fittings
Plumbing, Electrical & Heating
The correct plumbing pipes and electrical cables all need to be in place before laying the flooring and covering the walls.
The Plumbing pipes will serve your bath, basin, toilet and shower, while the waste pipes will take the wastewater away.
The correct electrical cables need to be in place to power your lights, shaver sockets and electric shower (if you have one).
Central heating pipes need to be in place to serve your radiator, Underfloor Heating or both, depending on the heating system.
All pipes and cables are fitted and concealed beneath the floorboards, on or in the walls and tested for correct function before the Bathroom’s installed.
Underfloor Heating
Underfloor Heating often features in the Bathrooms we fit. A warm Bathroom floor is a highly desirable luxury and a very efficient method of Heating.
Underfloor Heating pipes are run between the floorboard joists or set into a new floor. The pipes are heated with the hot water produced by your Boiler.
Alternatively, we can fit electric Underfloor Heated coils, which are quicker to fit and cheaper than ‘wet’ Underfloor Heating systems.
If you want Underfloor Heating in your new Bathroom, we’ll ensure it’s in place and working before the Bathroom’s installed.
Once everything’s in place, the next job is to cover the walls and install the flooring.
Flooring & Wall Materials
The flooring and wall materials are durable, easy to clean and water-resistant. The walls in the shower and bath areas must be waterproof.
Bathroom Walls
Tiles are the most popular material for covering Bathroom walls. Most Bathrooms are partially tiled. Some are even fully tiled.
Bathroom wall tiles are generally made from ceramic, Glass and even slate.
Tiles are available in various sizes, shapes and textures in thousands of designs and colours.
The endless amount of tiles available allows us to create a Bathroom of any design and look.
Tiling is fitted precisely by our expert bathroom fitter, who can fit tiles in any pattern, including standard grid, diagonal, offset, chevron, herringbone, etc.
Bathroom panels are available in various lengths to completely cover walls in the whole Bathroom or the area around your bath and shower.
Panels are available in many designs and colours to suit any Bathroom design.
The panels are 100% waterproof and available in different thicknesses and materials, including PVC, laminate and acrylic.
Panels are significantly quicker to fit than bathroom tiles and create a different look as there are no grout lines.
Wood panelling suits some designs and styles of Bathrooms, especially traditional, coastal and country styles.
If fitted, all wood is treated and coated in water-resistant paint.
All remaining areas of the bathroom walls that are not covered with tiles, panels or wood are painted. Bathroom paint is moisture and water-resistant and is available in many colours.
Bathroom Flooring
Bathroom Flooring has to withstand daily exposure to water and moisture while looking good and complementing the design of your Bathroom.
There’s no place for carpet in the modern Bathroom as it absorbs water and is unhygienic. Although we don’t recommend carpet, it can be fitted if you want it. Bathroom Carpet designed for bathroom floors is available but is nowhere as effective as the other types of flooring we fit.
Floor Tiles are the most commonly fitted flooring material. Tiles always look good on the bathroom floor and are available in various sizes and shapes in an endless amount of colours and designs.
Floor tiles are mainly made from Porcelain which is more durable than ceramic and tough to crack. Glass and slate are alternative floor tiles.
Floor tiles can be laid in various patterns, from simple patterns such as grid-style to more complex patterns such as modular.
Floor tiles come in various textures. Some tiles are more grippy on the floor than others. Grippiness needs to be considered depending on who’s using the Bathroom. Small mosaic styles are naturally grippier as there are more grout lines.
Vynil is a cheaper alternative to tiles. Vynil is available in many patterns and colours, is easy to lay and highly durable. Vynil comes in packs of tiles or on a roll.
Treated concrete has excellent water-resistant properties and suits many styles of modern bathrooms. However, the concrete must be periodically treated to ensure it remains water-resistant.
Some bathrooms require soft non-slip floors, specifically those used by older people. We can fit rubber flooring in these bathrooms. It’s soft, grippy and easy to clean.
Water-resistant hardwood flooring is a possibility and suits some designs of Bathrooms, although it’s generally not recommended as you still have to be careful when using it. In addition, you may experience issues if the floor gets too wet.
Fixtures & Fittings
Once we have your bathroom flooring and walls sorted, we will install the fixtures and fittings.
The main fixtures are your bathroom suite, which includes a bath, toilet basin, and a shower enclosure in some bathrooms.
All components of a bathroom suite are matching, so they look the same in a range of modern or traditional styles.
Baths and shower enclosures are available in a range of lengths and widths to suit the available spaces in all types of Bathrooms.
Toilets and basins are available in a range of sizes, heights and types to suit any style and design of the Bathroom.
For example, a traditional bathroom will likely include a rounded styled suite, a freestanding bath and a high cistern toilet.
A modern bathroom could include a sharp-edged fitted bath with a panel and a wall-hung sink and toilet for a minimal look.
Whatever style of bathroom design you choose, there’s a suite to compliment it.
Showers are fitted in enclosures or over the bath, depending on the type and size of the Bathroom you have.
We fit all types of showers, including electric, digital, eco, mixer, thermostatic, power, and the latest smart showers.
All suites are fitted with taps. Again many options are available in pillar, monobloc or mixer, with many traditional and modern designs on offer.
Once your suite’s in place, it’s time to install the finishing touches.
Your Bathroom will likely have a radiator. Heated towel rails work very well in all types of Bathrooms, allowing you to dry and keep multiple towels warm.
Other radiators include standard, traditional column, verticle and designer radiators.
Storage will be taken into consideration and fitted in the available spaces. For example, units with drawers and cupboards built-in are available to work in conjunction with toilets and basins. Freestanding Cupboards, shelves and vanity units can be fitted also.
Bathroom lights are built to withstand water and moisture. We’ll ensure the best coloured and the correct strength bulbs are installed to enhance the look and feel of your Bathroom.
All bathrooms fitted by TM Hughes are built to last. So once your bathrooms are finished, you’ll enjoy it for many years to come.
