TM Hughes & Son is a Gas Safe Registered, and Worcester Bosch accredited company. Over the years we have repaired all types and makes of boiler. Our experience enables us to repair any boiler quickly and efficiently.
When the engineer arrives, he’ll produce the required Gas Safe identification. So you know you’re using a qualified and legal specialist capable of fixing your Boiler.
The Boilers thoroughly inspected to diagnose the fault. Once the cause is established and what we need to do is clear, you’ll be given a full quote for parts and labour. No extras will be added on completion.
As an established local company with a competent, efficient staff, we are cheaper than large national companies and can compete with other local heating firms. After being given the go-ahead to start work on your boiler, the engineer will source the required parts. We carry many in stock on our vans. Any other components can usually be acquired in little time locally.
Once all the parts are to hand, the engineer will repair your boiler in a tidy manner.
After the repair, your boiler and central heating system are thoroughly tested to ensure it won’t fail again or cause you any problems. Radiators are bled to expel excess air and allow them to heat from top to bottom.
The work area’s tidied and left as found.
Boiler Recommendations
Recommendations may be made after the repair to prevent you from running into any boiler problems in the future. It’s recommended that you have your boiler serviced annually. It’s not just us Boiler manufacturers, and home insurers suggest an annual service also.
A Boiler service allows your boiler to run at best possible efficiency, which will save you money on heating bills. Servicing uncovers faults that could turn into future problems and confirms that your boiler safe with no risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Finally, a service validates most home insurance policies. If your boiler hasn’t been serviced in the past year, then your insurance may not cover you in the event of boiler failure.
Powerflushing may be recommended for older systems clogged up with sludge and debris (which may have been the cause of your boiler failure). This build-up prevents radiators from heating at the bottom and, in severe cases, the middle. Debris can and does cause damage to internal boiler parts. By pumping chemicals through your central heating system, we can remove the build-up. Protecting your boiler and allowing optimal heat output from your radiators.
Our friendly engineers will write a free no-obligation quote for any additional work you may require or want to do.

Why Do Boilers Breakdown?
There are several reasons why Boilers fail. First of all, boilers need to run at the correct pressure. Low pressure will stop a boiler from working. Occasionally a boiler just needs repressurising to get it working again.
Continuous low pressure’s caused by leaks, blockages and faulty pressure relief valves, which can break when boilers are set at too high a pressure. Boilers that keep switching off are signs of low pressure.
The most common cause of leaks within boilers is from worn seals or broken pressure valves. In this case, new seals/valves are needed. Otherwise, a pipe could be leaking due to improper fitting or corrosion and require correcting. Leaks must be repaired on the discovery. Left alone, they will likely damage your boiler and other parts of your home.
Blockages caused by debris and limescale within the system prevent the right water flow, which creates low pressure.
Blockages can damage internal parts like a heat exchanger. A piece of debris gets lodged in the heat exchanger, which then overheats and breaks. If an engineer suspects a blockage in the boiler or system, the blockage will be located and removed.
Sometimes blockages are so severe that parts cannot be unblocked, and a new part will have to be fitted.
Every boiler utilises a thermocouple, a temperature sensor that regulates the amount of gas getting to the boiler.
The thermocouple will shut off the gas supply when the pilot light has blown out, an essential safety feature that prevents gas leaks.
A faulty thermocouple will prevent the correct function of a boiler and will need changing.
At times pumps fail in the boiler and on the central heating system. This can be caused by age, seizing up or blockages. A faulty pump will prevent your boiler from working.
Your thermostat controls the boiler and central heating system by sensing the air temperature. Boiler problems are sometimes caused by faulty or no longer accurate thermostats that need to be renewed.
All modern condensing boilers use a condensate pipe to take away wastewater generated by heating. Condensate pipes need to run outside. Unfortunately, we have found many homes in Maldon with uninsulated pipes.
In freezing conditions, it’s common for the condensate pipe to freeze during winter, which stops the boiler from working. The solution? Defrosting and insulating the frozen pipe so the boiler runs again and doesn’t break down during the next cold snap.
