Welcome to TM Hughes & Son Gas Service Ltd. We offer a connection and disconnection service for Gas cookers, ovens and hobs in Colchester and the surrounding areas.
While Gas Cookers are declining in popularity in the UK (now accounting for less than 40% of cookers), many people still prefer a gas hob/oven over an electric one.
Cooking over gas provides instant heat and greater accuracy than cooking with electric ovens and hobs.
If you’re one of the residents of Colchester who prefer gas and have a new oven or hob on the way, we would like to fit it for you.
The fitting of gas appliances is not a DIY job. All gas appliances must be installed by qualified Gas Safe Registered engineers who can fit the appliance safely and issue the relevant certification.
The certificate proves that your new gas cooker, oven or hob is safe for use and has been fitted legally.
The certificate also proves that your appliance has been fitted by a Gas Safe Engineer, a condition of manufacturers warranties and home insurers.
Gas Cooker Disconnections & Installations are a quick and non-expensive procedure.

How Gas Cooker Installations Work
All gas appliances, including cookers, are fitted using a strict procedure that ensures correct fitting and safety.
First of all, you need to book an engineer for a convenient time and date after your new cooker arrives.
Our engineer will arrive on time. The first step is to remove your old cooker, hob or oven (if present).
Once the area’s clear, the engineer will inspect the gas line, gas cooker connection on the gas line and the ‘hot zone’ above the cooker/hob.
If your old cooker connection connected to the gas line is unsuitable for your new cooker, a new one will need fitting.
By law, the ‘hot zone’ (750mm above the hob and 50mm on each side of the hob) must be free from combustible obstructions such as kitchen units, cables, shelves, smoke alarms, wallpaper etc., anything in the way that could potentially catch fire.
Once the engineer’s satisfied the gas line, connection, and hot zone are ok, your new cooker is unpacked, connected to the gas supply and put into position.
Your new cooker’s tested as per the manufacturer’s instructions. In addition, the connection’s tested to ensure there’s no leaking gas.
Finally, our engineer will write you a Gas Appliance Installation certificate, keep this for your records and use it if you ever need to claim on the warranty.
