What is Underfloor Heating?

Underfloor Heating heats your home from the ground up by running hot water through pipes or heating electric cables under the floor.

The system creates a gentle, even warmth spreading across the room. It’s a modern alternative to traditional radiators that offers unparalleled heating and energy efficiency.

There are two types of Underfloor Heating:

  • Wet Systems: Use pipes filled with warm water from your Boiler. They are ideal for medium to larger areas.
  • Electric Systems: Use heating cables or mats. They are simpler to install and are perfect for smaller spaces.

Underfloor Heating provides consistent warmth without the need for bulky radiators. It frees up wall space and is more energy-efficient than traditional heating systems. The warmth is distributed evenly, and the pipe/coil insulation retains and emits heat. This results in improved energy efficiency and lower energy bills.

Underfloor Heating Installation

Installing underfloor heating is a precision job that requires skill and experience, which our engineers have a lot of experience in.

Wet Systems

Wet Underfloor Heating installation involves laying pipes beneath the floor that circulate warm water to heat the space.

The process begins with designing the layout ensuring the pipes are spaced correctly to provide even heat distribution across the room. Once the design is complete, the pipes are laid onto a prepared subfloor, often in a screed or insulation layer, to ensure maximum energy efficiency.

The pipes are then connected to the Boiler. After installation, the system is tested for leaks before adding the final flooring layer. Once in place, Underfloor Heating pipes will last for decades.

Wet systems are ideal for medium to large spaces and new builds and extensions where the floor can be easily accessed. While installation may take longer than Electric Underfloor Heating, Wet offers better energy efficiency and lower energy bills over the long term.

Wet underfloor Heating is particularly effective for maintaining consistent warmth in a room, as the radiant heat from the floor rises evenly, creating a comfortable and energy-efficient home.

Electric Systems

Electric underfloor heating systems use heating cables or mats embedded in the floor to generate warmth. Electric systems are usually easier to install than wet systems, making them popular for smaller spaces or retrofitting existing floors.

Electric systems can be installed under almost any type of flooring, including tiles, laminate, and vinyl, making them versatile for various applications.

The installation involves laying the heating cables or mats in a grid pattern across the floor and connecting them to a thermostat for temperature control. The system is then tested to ensure it works properly before applying the flooring.

Electric Underfloor Heating heats a room quickly and efficiently. It is ideal for spaces where quick warmth is needed, such as bathrooms, kitchens, or bedrooms. While it can be more expensive to run than a wet system, it offers greater flexibility and is often the best option for smaller areas.

Thermostats

Thermostats for Underfloor Heating come in various types, each suited for different needs and systems. Programmable thermostats allow you to set the heating for different times of the day. You can ensure your home is warm when needed and save energy when you don’t.

There are also smart thermostats that connect to your phone or other devices. These thermostats offer advanced control and energy-saving features. You can adjust the temperature remotely, set schedules, and monitor energy usage anywhere. Smart thermostats are compatible with Wet and Electric systems and are ideal for those wanting convenience and greater control over their Heating.

Zoning Your Underfloor Heating

Zone underfloor heating divides a heating system into separate areas that can be controlled independently. Each ‘zone’ has a thermostat, allowing for temperature control room by room.

For example, you might want the living room warmer than the bedrooms or the bathroom to be heated more in the morning. With a zoned system, you can adjust each area to your preferred temperature, offering greater comfort and energy efficiency.

Zoning is particularly useful in larger homes or spaces with varying heating needs. Zoning will help reduce energy consumption by only heating the rooms rather than the entire house.

Servicing For Underfloor Heating Systems

Servicing Wet systems is essential to keep your Underfloor Heating in good working order.

Servicing involves checking the manifold, tightening seals, testing the pump, ensuring there are no leaks in the pipes and ensuring the water pressure is correct. Over time, ‘sludge’ can build up in the pipes, reducing efficiency and preventing your rooms from Heating properly. In this instance, we can flush the pipes.

If you have a wet underfloor heating system that hasn’t been checked, please contact us to book an inspection and service.

Repairs for Underfloor Heating Systems

We undertake repairs to both Wet and Electric Underfloor Heating systems.

For wet systems, leaks from the pipes are the most common problem. They can occur due to loosening wear, poor installation, or damage. Additionally, problems with the Boiler or thermostat can affect the system’s performance.

Most Wet Underfloor Heating issues can be tackled above the ground without the need to access the pipes under the floor.

Electric systems are generally less complex but can still experience issues. The heating cables or mats can break, and thermostats can fail. Sometimes, the system may not heat evenly or stop working altogether.

Whatever your issue, we can solve the problem and get your Underfloor Heating system back to full working order.
