Designing Your Bathroom

When planning your bathroom, many areas need to be taken into consideration from start to finish, these include

Every part has to work with the style of bathroom you’ve chosen. Our designer will make sure that everything fits in together and nothing looks out of place. There are hundreds of different tiles, bathroom suites, taps, fixtures, fittings etc., to suit any style of bathroom.

Bathroom Flooring

Bathroom flooring is the foundation. The bathroom floor has to be watertight and as non-slip as possible when wet. Some flooring has better non-slip properties than other types of flooring. Your choice will depend on the style of the bathroom and unique individual tastes.

Vinyl is available in many different designs, is relatively cheap and easy to fit. Vinyl comes as tiles or on a roll. Vinyl can be slippery when wet.

Tiles are the most popular type of bathroom floor covering, extremely hard-wearing, waterproof and available in lots of different designs, textures and shapes. Tiles have to be cut and fitted precisely. Floor tiles are usually porcelain, much tougher and less prone to cracking and chipping than standard ceramic.

Some homeowners want a wood floor in their bathroom which you’ll be able to get away with as long as you’re careful and don’t get it too wet. Engineered wood flooring can be used in bathrooms, but it’s not the best choice, especially if you have children (who love to splash water and get everything wet)

Concrete floors have become popular in recent years, as have materials such as slate and marble. Concrete floors must be treated when laid and every couple of years to keep them non-porous. Slate & marble can be fitted, but they’re expensive and again high maintenance, but if you want these designer floor materials, we’ll happily install them for you.

If members of your household are prone to slipping over (such as children or older adults), you can install rubber flooring. Available in tiles or on a roll in various colours. Rubber’s the softest of all materials, grippy and waterproof.

Bathroom Walls

Bathroom walls set the look and feel of your bathroom. Different wall coverings can be used in various places for specific effects. Wall areas around baths and showers must use waterproof materials. Non-waterproof decorative elements can be used in other areas if you wish.

Tiles are the standard for bathroom walls, hard-wearing and waterproof, with lots of different designs available to help create any bathroom style. Match wall tiles with floor tiles for a continuous look or use in contrast with other materials to create a particular effect.

Alternatively, wall panels are fitted, available in acrylic, laminate or PVC, all waterproof materials. Panels are quick and easy to install, also very hygienic and straightforward to clean. Available in different designs to suit any bathroom.

Wood cladding and features are possible in area’s that are not going to be splashed with water. When wood’s necessary, we’ll ensure it’s treated and resistant to water, moisture and mould. Decorative wood can be painted in any colour to suit your design of the bathroom.

Any areas for your bathroom not covered in tiles, wall panels or wood are coated in waterproof bathroom paint. Generally, a silk finish that’s easy to clean and available in hundreds of different colours.

Bathroom Suites

The bathroom suite consists of the main parts of the bathroom. It’s got to look good, fitting in with the overall design and being functional for everyday use.

Bathroom suites are available in a range of designs, shapes and sizes. They can generally be split into two categories traditional style and modern style. Traditional suites tend to be rounded, while modern suites tend to be squarish.

Toilets are available in a range of designs, from modern wall-hung, fixed to a frame on the inside of the wall to back to the wall where all the plumbing is hidden. The close-coupled design where the system sits directly on top of the toilet is more common. The type of toilet fitted depends mostly on the space available. Whichever toilet you choose internally, it will be a modern dual flush water saver. Good for the environment and your water bill.

Basins are your best friend when it comes to washing your hands, cleaning your teeth and shaving. Inset basins sit within a vanity unit or bathroom unit. Other styles include pedestal, stand-mounted, and under the counter. Our bathroom fitter will show all their designs and types available.

Most baths are standard with a panel, so you cannot see the plumbing underneath. Freestanding, corner and walk-in baths are also available. These are less common in bathrooms around Southend. Standard baths are made from hard-wearing acrylic other baths materials are available such as stone and various metals; however, they are more expensive than standard acrylic constructed baths. All baths come in a range of sizes to fit your space perfectly.

Showers

You’ll likely have a shower in your bathroom. Our plumbers have many years of experience in fitting all types of shower. Showers can be mounted in an enclosure (walk-in shower) or over the bath in this instance. You may have an actual shower bath installed)

Showers we fit include mixer, electric, digital thermostatic and power showers.

Mixer showers can be fitted directly to bath taps or as a standalone shower that mixes both hot and cold water to reach your chosen temperature. Boost your mixer shower with a pump (a power shower) which increases the water pressure. Pumps can only be fitted to certain types of shower/plumbing systems. The bathroom designer will let you know if a pump’s possible with your plumbing system.

Electric showers use water directly from the mains supply and instantly heats the water as it runs through with a heating element housed in the shower.

Digital thermostatic showers allow for greater convenience and safety powered by a digital remote control separate from the shower units. Unlike other showers, they always maintain the set temperature, which can change the temperature suddenly if the water pressure decreases.

Taps

Bathroom taps complement your bathroom suites and bathroom. Designs of tap include pillar, mixer and monobloc.

Storage

Once your bathroom suites in place, you might want some storage such as shelving, vanity units or cupboards, all of which can be fitted in areas of your bathroom selected to complement the overall design of your bathroom.

Heating

Most bathrooms have a radiator. The most popular is the towel rail ladder radiator, where you can hang your towels and keep them warm and dry. We fit other styles of radiator from standard to designer in vertical and horizontal shapes.

We can also install underfloor heating in the bathroom. Who doesn’t want to warm the bathroom floor? Wet systems work in conjunction with your existing central heating system. Wet systems are more expensive to fit than electric underfloor heating (which runs off the electrical mains supply) but are more efficient.

Lighting

The mood of your bathroom will be enhanced by lighting. We have electricians on board with many years of experience in fitting lighting. Many different bathroom lights are available, from single units to multiple spotlights. Task lightings installed to aid essential activities such as putting on makeup or shaving.
