Every homeowner should have these tools on hand.
Plunger
In the event of a toilet or sink blockage, you may be able to free the blockage (or partially unblock it) with a plunger. A plunger is a rubber suction cup on a stick. You need two plungers one for your sink and one for your toilet. For hygiene reasons never use the same plunger on your sink that’s used for a toilet. A plunger works by pressing down on a drain opening and pulling up. Creating a vacuum that will clear mild blockages. More severe blockages will need looking at by a qualified plumber.
Adjustable Spanner
An adjustable spanner’s useful to tighten loose bolts in the event of a leaky elbow or coupling. Be careful not to overtighten. If leaks keep occurring new PTFE tape’s required. PTFE is also is known as plumbers tape is used for making pipe threads watertight. For old joints, PTFE tape might not be enough. If a connection keeps coming loose, replacement a good idea.
Locking Pliers
Locking pliers lock for a firm grip. Use in conjunction with your adjustable spanner when tightening an elbow or coupling. In the event of a severe leak you will need to shut off your mains stopcock. Stuck stopcocks are very common and won’t turn by hand. In the event of a leak, you will need to close your stopcock. Locking pliers will give you the required leverage to free the stopcock and shut your water off.
Duct Tape
For a tempory seal in the event of a leaking pipe use duct tape. Once the water’s shut off the water that remains in the pipes will still leak through. Duct tape will keep this water at bay until we arrive.
A temporary patch to leaking water isn’t permanent and shouldn’t be treated as such. It’s only a matter of time before a patched leak will leak again. A partially unblocked toilet will block again. By all means get these tools for your home. Remember all plumbing emergencies need looking at by a qualified plumber.
