What To Do In A Plumbing Emergency
Call us immediately and we can give you advice over the phone (to minimise potential damage) before we get to you.
When you have a leak or a burst pipe, the first thing to do is locate your mains stopcock and shut off your water supply. Keep turning the stopcock clockwise until it won’t turn any further. This will stop any further water from getting into your plumbing system, but water already in the system can still leak out. If you have a radiator leak or burst central heating pipe the water could keep flowing until the whole system is empty.
To minimise damage put a bucket or towels around the area of the leak and change as necessary.
If you have a standard boiler system and have a cold water storage cistern (usually in the loft) water could keep leaking until the storage tank is empty. If you feel the storage cistern is feeding in this instance close the gate valve on the cold water pipe (the gate valve should be close to the tank). If this doesn’t work open all your hot taps which will empty the storage cistern.
