TM Hughes & Son has been shortlisted for the 2025 East of England Energy Efficiency Awards, a regional event highlighting good practices in improving energy efficiency across homes and businesses. The awards recognise the work of contractors, installers, and professionals who help reduce energy use and support sustainable energy solutions throughout the East of England.

About the Energy Efficiency Awards

The Energy Efficiency Awards were established to promote and celebrate the best work nationwide to reduce energy usage. These regional events bring together individuals and organisations involved in improving the energy efficency of buildings, whether through insulation, heating upgrades, or renewable energy installations.

The 2025 East of England ceremony takes place on Thursday, 22 May 2025. It provides an opportunity for professionals from across the industry to showcase their work, connect with others, and be recognised for their efforts to improve energy efficiency at a local level.

Our Previous Recognition

TM Hughes & Son previously won the Boiler & Heating Installer and Contractor of the Year award at the 2022 event. The award acknowledged our commitment to installing efficient heating systems and delivering a reliable, customer-focused service.

The Importance of Energy Efficiency in Heating

Energy efficiency is important to homeowners and businesses alike, especially in light of rising fuel costs and national net-zero targets.

Heating makes up a large portion of household energy consumption, and improving the performance of heating systems—through Boiler upgrades, smart controls or better system design—can significantly lower bills and carbon emissions.

The Energy Efficiency Awards help raise awareness of these issues, while recognising those actively helping to address them.

Categories at the 2025 East of England Awards

These are the available award categories that nominees can enter.

Looking Ahead

The results will be announced in May, and the event promises to celebrate the progress made in the energy sector across the East of England.

Regardless of the outcome, being shortlisted is a welcome acknowledgement of the work being done across the region to create more energy-efficient homes and buildings.

Boiler Warranties can seem like a maze of technical jargon and fine print. We aim to simplify this maze, making Boiler warranties easy to understand.

This guide will explore what Boiler warranties typically cover, how they work, and why they’re important. We’ll also look into the common terms you might encounter, how to ensure your warranty remains valid, and what to do if you need to make a claim.

Understanding Boiler Warranties

What is a Boiler Warranty?

A Boiler warranty is protection from the manufacturer. It’s their commitment to you that should anything go wrong with your Boiler within a certain period, they’ll fix it.

Warranties cover faults or breakdowns that occur due to manufacturing defects.

Key Elements of Boiler Warranties

Duration: Boiler warranties vary in length, typically ranging from two to twelve years, depending on the make and model of the Boiler.

Coverage: Most warranties will cover the cost of parts and labour for repairs. However, it’s important to check what is included, as some warranties may not cover certain components or have different terms for different parts.

Terms and Conditions: Like any agreement, the devil is in the details. Warranties come with specific conditions, requiring annual servicing by a Gas Safe registered engineer to keep the warranty valid.

Transferability: Some warranties are transferable to the next homeowner if you sell your property. However, this isn’t always the case, so it’s worth checking.

How Boiler Warranties Work

Activating Your Warranty

The first step after purchasing a boiler is to activate its warranty. This is an important step that is often overlooked. Activation usually involves registering your Boiler with the manufacturer, which is often done online or over the phone. Failing to register can invalidate the warranty, so doing this promptly after installation is essential.

Typical Duration of Warranties

Boiler warranties vary in length, typically 2 to 12 years. The duration depends on the manufacturer and the model of the Boiler. Longer warranties are often seen as a sign of the manufacturer’s confidence and product quality.

Understanding the Terms and Conditions

Every Boiler warranty comes with its own set of terms and conditions. These might include requirements such as:

Professional Installation: Warranties require a certified Gas Safe registered engineer to install the Boiler.

Annual Servicing: To keep the warranty valid, manufacturers insist on annual servicing by a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. Servicing ensures your Boiler runs efficiently and safely.

Exclusions: Certain parts of the Boiler or types of damage may not be covered. It’s important to read your warranty and understand these exclusions.

Making a Warranty Claim

If you encounter a problem with your Boiler, the process for making a warranty claim generally involves the following steps:

Contact the Manufacturer: Reach out to the manufacturer’s customer service team. Have your warranty details and Boiler model number ready.

Describe the Issue: Clearly explain the problem you’re experiencing. This will help in assessing whether it’s covered under warranty.

Arrange for Inspection/Repair: If covered, the manufacturer will arrange for an engineer to repair your Boiler. This is typically done at no cost, provided the issue falls under the warranty coverage.

Keeping Your Warranty Valid

Keeping your Boiler warranty valid requires a bit of effort. Here are some tips:

Keep Records: Retain all documentation, including your warranty certificate, proof of annual servicing, and any repair work done.

Adhere to Servicing Schedules: Ensure your Boiler is serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Use Qualified Professionals: Always use Gas Safe registered engineers for repairs or maintenance to your Boiler.

Factors Influencing Your Warranty

The Role of Certified Installation

The installation process is one of the most important factors in ensuring your Boiler warranty is valid. Certified Gas Safe registered engineers must install Boilers. This requirement ensures safety and adherence to UK regulations. An incorrectly installed Boiler can void your warranty and pose significant risks to your home and family.

Regular Maintenance and Servicing

Regular maintenance is a key condition of Boiler warranties. Manufacturers typically require an annual service by a qualified engineer to keep the warranty valid.

Unauthorised Repairs

Allowing someone who is not a certified engineer to repair or modify your Boiler can void the warranty.

Is Your Warranty Transferable?

An often-overlooked aspect of Boiler warranties is their transferability. If you’re selling your home, check if your Boiler warranty can be transferred to the new homeowner.

Warranty Extensions and Renewals

Some manufacturers offer the option to extend your warranty beyond the standard term for an additional cost. Extending the warranty can provide extra peace of mind. However, weigh the cost against the potential benefits before deciding.

Claiming Under a Boiler Warranty

Here are the typical steps to claim your Boiler warranty.

Step 1: Check Your Warranty Details

Before you phone or send an email, it’s important to check your warranty documentation. Confirm that the issue you’re facing is covered under the warranty. Check the warranty period to ensure it’s still valid, and look for any specific conditions related to your problem.

Step 2: Gather Necessary Information

When contacting the manufacturer, gather all the necessary information. This includes:

The boiler model and serial number.

The date of installation and details of the installer.

Records of annual servicing and any previous repair work.

A clear description of the issue you’re experiencing.

This information will streamline the process and aid in quick resolution.

Step 3: Contact the Manufacturer

With your information ready, reach out to the manufacturer’s customer service. This is usually done via phone, email, or their website. Be clear and concise about the issue, providing all the relevant details you’ve gathered. The manufacturer will then guide you through their specific claims process.

Step 4: Schedule an Inspection or Repair

If your claim is accepted, the manufacturer will arrange for an engineer to inspect your Boiler. This inspection confirms the issue and determines if it falls under the warranty coverage. If it does, they will proceed with the necessary repairs or replacement parts at no cost, as stipulated in your warranty.

Step 5: Follow Up and Keep Records

After the repair or inspection, keep a record of the work done, including dates and details of the repairs and any parts replaced. This documentation can be important for future warranty claims and keeping track of your Boiler’s service history.

What If Your Claim Is Denied?

In cases where your warranty claim is denied, you should first understand the reason. You might need to seek repair services independently if it’s due to a voided warranty or an uncovered issue. However, if you believe the claim was unjustly denied, you can follow up with the manufacturer for further clarification or seek advice from Citizens Advice or Trading Standards.

Tips for a Smooth Warranty Claim Process

Act Promptly: As soon as you notice an issue, start the claim process.

Stay Organised: Keep all your Boiler documents, including warranty information, in one place for easy access.

Be Proactive: Regular maintenance and following manufacturer guidelines can prevent many issues and make warranty claims smoother.

Understanding the warranty claim process and being prepared will reduce the stress and inconvenience of dealing with Boiler issues. Remember, your warranty is there to protect you, so don’t hesitate to use it when needed.

Extended Warranties and Additional Coverage

Extended warranties and additional coverage offer longer protection and peace of mind, but weighing their benefits against the cost is important.

What are Extended Warranties?

Extended warranties are additional coverage plans that you can purchase to prolong the protection offered by the standard manufacturer’s warranty. They usually kick in after the standard warranty expires, extending when you can receive repairs or replacements at little to no cost.

Pros and Cons of Extended Warranties

Pros:

Longer Coverage: Provides peace of mind for a more extended period.

Cost Savings: Potentially saves money on expensive repairs after the standard warranty expires.

Convenience: Offers continued assurance of support from the manufacturer or a trusted provider.

Cons:

Additional Cost: Requires an extra investment.

Coverage Overlap: Some extended warranties may overlap with the coverage you already have under your home insurance or other policies.

Fine Print: As with standard warranties, extended warranties have terms and conditions that need careful consideration.

Deciding if an Extended Warranty is Right for You

To decide whether an extended warranty is a good investment, consider:

Your Boiler’s Reliability: Research your Boiler model’s reliability and average lifespan.

Cost-Benefit Analysis: Compare the extended warranty cost against potential repair or replacement costs.

Your Financial Situation: Assess if the upfront cost of the extended warranty is manageable and worth the potential future savings.

Additional Coverage Options

Besides extended warranties, there are other coverage options like Boiler insurance. Boiler insurance typically covers a wider range of issues than warranties, including those arising from normal wear and tear. Some policies also include annual servicing, which will conveniently meet maintenance requirements and keep your warranty valid.

Making the Most of Your Warranty and Coverage

Ultimately, whether you opt for an extended warranty or additional insurance, the key is understanding what’s covered, what’s not, and what conditions apply. Be sure to:

Read the Small Print: Understand the details of any extended warranty or insurance policy before committing.

Shop Around: Compare offers from different providers to find the best deal.

Stay Informed: Keep aware of any changes in terms and conditions.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Boiler warranties are essential for homeowners, providing financial and functional security for your essential gas appliance.

Understanding the terms and maintaining compliance with conditions like annual servicing by Gas Safe registered engineers are key to keeping these warranties valid.

Activating, maintaining, and claiming under warranty ensures continuous protection and avoids unexpected costs.

What is the ‘Gas Boiler Ban’, and as a UK homeowner, should you be concerned? This article will explain the Gas Boiler Ban and answer any questions or concerns you may have.

What Is The Gas Boiler Ban?

The “Gas Boiler Ban” refers to measures taken by some countries, including the UK, to phase out the use of gas boilers in homes and businesses as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.

The rationale behind the ban is that gas boilers, which burn natural gas to produce heat, release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.

Several countries, including the UK, have proposed or enacted regulations to phase out or reduce the use of gas boilers, replacing them with more sustainable alternatives such as heat pumps, solar thermal systems, and biomass boilers.

What Is The UK Gas Boiler Ban Deadline?

The UK government has announced plans to phase out the installation of new gas boilers by 2035. This date has recently been extended. The original date was 2026.

Will I Have To Replace My Gas Boiler In 2035?

Under the current proposals, if you have a functioning gas boiler in 2035, you will not be required to replace it immediately. However, once it reaches the end of its life, you’ll need to install an alternative solution, such as an electric Boiler or heat pump.

Will It Be Illegal To Own A Gas Boiler After 2035?

No, owning a Gas Boiler will not be illegal after 2035. The UK government’s plans regarding banning Gas Boilers have not suggested it would be illegal to own a gas boiler after 2035. The proposals are about phasing out the installation of new gas boilers by 2035.

Will The UK Boiler Ban Date Be Pushed Back Again?

The UK Boiler ban will likely be pushed back again. The government’s aim of achieving net zero by 2050 is looking increasingly unlikely.

The government wants homeowners to switch from Gas Boilers to alternatives such as Heat Pumps or electric Boilers, both of which are powered by electricity.

Currently, 74% of UK homes are heated by Gas, while 9% are heated by electricity and 3% by oil.

That’s a lot of homes that need to convert from Gas (and oil) to electricity for their heating, and even if every home did switch in time, it’s highly questionable the UK could generate enough extra electricity to power the switch.

If there’s significant public resistance or concerns about the infrastructure’s readiness, the industry or economic challenges, such as recessions or other unexpected disruptions, the Boiler ban might be pushed back further.

Also, there’s the capacity of the industry to manufacture, distribute, and install alternative heating solutions at scale. If manufacturers can’t meet demand, have supply chain issues or other challenges, it could impact the deadline also.

What Are The Alternatives To Gas Boilers?

Here are some alternatives to Gas Boilers.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are being touted as the main alternative to Gas Boilers. There are two types.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Air Source Heat Pumps extract heat from the outside air (similar to how fridges extract heat from the inside). The heat is used to warm water for radiators or underfloor heating.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground Source Heat Pumps use pipes buried in the garden to extract heat from the ground. The principle is similar to Air Source Heat Pumps but more efficient due to the consistent ground temperature.

Electric Boilers

Electric Boilers are similar to Gas Boilers but use electricity to heat the water. They are 100% efficient in converting electricity to heat, but the overall carbon footprint depends on how the electricity is generated. If the grid becomes greener, so does the operation of electric boilers.

Solar Thermal Systems

Solar Thermal Systems use solar panels installed on the roof to collect heat from the sun and use it to warm water stored in a hot water cylinder.

Biomass Boilers

To provide heat, biomass boilers burn organic materials, typically wood pellets, chips, or logs. While burning biomass does release carbon dioxide, it’s roughly the same amount that the plants absorbed during their growth, making it more carbon neutral than fossil fuels.

Hydrogen Boilers

Hydrogen can be burned to produce heat without emitting carbon dioxide (only water vapour). This makes Hydrogen Boilers a potential low-carbon replacement for gas boilers.

The challenge, however, is producing green hydrogen at scale and cost-effectively.

Will The Alternatives To Gas Boilers Be More Expensive?

Yes, in most cases, the alternatives are more expensive than Gas Boilers. Gas Boiler installations start at around £1400. Here’s what the alternatives start at:

Heat Pumps

Air- and ground-source heat pumps have higher upfront costs than traditional gas boilers. Ground source heat pumps, in particular, require significant groundwork, which can be expensive.

Heat pump installations start at around £8000

Solar Thermal Systems

The cost of installing solar panels and associated systems can be more than a Gas Boiler installation (depending on the installation/system), especially if retrofitting to an existing property.

Solar Thermal System installations start at around £3000

Biomass Boilers

The initial cost of Biomass Boilers is higher than that of Gas Boilers. Prices start at around £8000

Electric Boilers

Electric Boilers often have a lower installation cost than heat pumps, but they are not as efficient in running costs, especially when electricity prices are high.

Electric Boiler installation costs start at £1000

Hydrogen Boilers

Initial costs might be higher as a newer technology, but they could decrease as the technology matures and becomes more widespread.

The typical Hydrogen Ready Boiler installation cost starts at around £2500.

Running Costs

Here’s how the alternatives to Gas Boilers compare regarding running costs.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps have lower running costs than Gas Boilers, especially if you’re replacing an older, less efficient Boiler. The efficiency of a heat pump can be 3-4 times that of conventional Boilers.

Solar Thermal Systems

Once installed, the running costs are minimal, as sunlight is free. However, the system will most likely require backup heating during periods of low sunlight.

Biomass Boilers

Wood pellets or logs cost can vary based on supply and demand. It can be competitive, especially with cheap and sustainable wood supply access.

Electric Boilers

If electricity prices are high, running costs can be significantly more than running a Gas Boiler. However, electricity prices might stabilise or decrease as the grid becomes more renewable.

Hydrogen Boilers

The running costs will depend on the price of hydrogen, which is currently more expensive than natural gas but might decrease with economies of scale and advancements in green hydrogen production.

Conclusion

As a homeowner with a Gas Boiler, you don’t have to worry about the ban.

At the time of writing, the ban won’t come into effect for another 12 years, and between now and then, there’s a very good chance the ban will be pushed back or scrapped altogether.

Currently, Gas Boilers are the cheapest and most effective method of heating UK homes, and you still have plenty of time to enjoy your Gas Boiler.

Even if the ban does come into effect in 2035, you can get a new Gas Boiler installed near the deadline, and as modern Gas Boilers last 12+ years, you can still enjoy many years of a Gas-heated home past the Boiler Ban deadline.

Gas safety is of paramount importance for every household in the UK.

Checking a gas engineer’s credentials and registering Gas Safe before working in your home or business is part of gas safety.

As homeowners, landlords, or tenants, we must ensure that any gas work in our properties adheres to the highest safety standards.

This is where the Gas Safe Register comes into play.

The Gas Safe Register is the UK’s official list of gas engineers legally allowed to work gas appliances and systems.

If someone is not on this register, they should not be working with gas.

This article will guide you through verifying a gas engineer’s credentials, ensuring they are Gas Safe registered, and highlighting why this is so critical for the safety of you, your family and property.

What Is The Gas Safe Register?

The Gas Safe Register is the gatekeeper for gas safety in the UK, ensuring that those who undertake gas work are competent, trained, and officially recognised.

History And Purpose Of The Gas Safe Register

Established in 2009, the Gas Safe Register replaced the previous regulatory body, CORGI, as the UK’s gas registration body.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) initiated the change to streamline and enhance gas safety standards across the country.

This register is not just a list but a commitment to protect the public from unsafe gas work.

The Role Of The Gas Safe Register

Being the UK’s only official gas registration body, the Gas Safe Register licenses qualified engineers to undertake gas work, ensuring that they meet the required safety standards.

Moreover, the register actively campaigns for gas safety awareness among the public, collaborating with stakeholders and the industry to raise standards and educate on best practices.

The Role Of The Health And Safety Executive (HSE) In Overseeing The Gas Safe Register

While the Gas Safe Register operates independently, its activities are overseen by the HSE, a national organisation that monitors health, safety, and illness at work.

The HSE ensures the Gas Safe Register adheres to rigorous standards and protocols to maintain and enhance public safety.

The Gas Safe Register is more than a name or a logo. It’s a symbol of assurance.

When you see the Gas Safe badge, you can be confident that the individual or business carrying it has undergone the necessary training regular assessments, and is competent to work safely and legally with gas.

Why Is It Important To Check A Gas Engineer’s Credentials?

The need for gas safety cannot be understated. Gas is a silent utility in our homes, working behind the scenes to provide us with warmth, cooked meals, and hot showers.

However, when mishandled, it can pose severe threats. This section highlights the importance of ensuring your gas engineer is Gas Safe registered.

The Risks Associated With Unregistered Or Unqualified Gas Engineers

Gas Leaks: An improperly fitted or serviced gas appliance can lead to gas leaks, which can be fatal. Leaking gas can result in fires or explosions, endangering lives and property.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Often dubbed the “silent killer,” carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless gas that can be released from poorly serviced or installed appliances. Inhalation can lead to severe health issues and even death.

Faulty Installations: Unqualified engineers might not install appliances per the manufacturer’s guidelines, leading to inefficiencies, increased energy bills, breakdowns and invalid warranties.

Legal Implications For Homeowners And Landlords

In the UK, it’s illegal for anyone to undertake gas work without being Gas Safe registered. Homeowners and especially landlords have a legal obligation to ensure:

Gas equipment and appliances in their properties are installed and serviced regularly by Gas Safe registered engineers.

A valid, up-to-date gas safety record is maintained and provided to tenants.

Failure to comply can result in fines and imprisonment.

Moreover, insurance claims might be invalidated if an incident occurs due to negligence.

The Importance Of Regular Gas Appliance Checks And Maintenance

Even if an appliance appears to be working correctly, underlying issues may only be evident with a professional check. Regular maintenance ensures:

Extended appliance lifespan.

Improved efficiency, leading to energy savings.

Early detection of potential problems, avoiding costly repairs or replacements in the future.

How To Check A Gas Engineer’s Gas Safe Credentials

The credentials of a gas engineer serve as a safeguard—a promise that the individual has the expertise, experience, and authority to work with gas appliances.

By ensuring that any engineer who works on your gas installations is Gas Safe registered, you’re prioritising the safety and well-being of everyone in the property.

Before allowing a gas engineer to work in your home or property, verifying their credentials is essential.

The Gas Safe Register has made this process straightforward, and by following these steps, you can ensure you’re placing your trust in the right hands.

Ask To See Their Gas Safe ID Card

Most Gas Safe Registered engineers will present their Gas Safe ID on arrival. Otherwise, ask to see their ID before they enter your property.

The features of a genuine Gas Safe ID card will include:

A holographic Gas Safe logo

The engineer’s photograph

A start and expiry date

A unique license number (which can be cross-referenced with the Gas Safe online database)

The back of the card lists the types of gas work the engineer is qualified to undertake. Ensure that the specific task you need aligns with their qualifications.

Use The Official Gas Safe Register Website Or Phone Them

Visit the official Gas Safe Register website and locate the “Check the Register” or a similar search option.

Alternatively, you can phone the Gas Safe Register to check.

Reliable Sources For Reviews And Feedback

While personal recommendations from friends, family or colleagues are invaluable, consider checking platforms like Trustpilot, Checkatrade, or Google Reviews for a broader perspective.

By following these steps, you ensure the safety of your property and loved ones and promote a culture of accountability and professionalism within the industry.

Remember, it’s better to spend a few extra minutes verifying credentials than to risk the dire consequences of unsafe gas work.

Warning Signs Of Unregistered Or Unqualified Engineers

Unregistered or unqualified engineers can pose serious threats, both immediate and long-term. Here are some warning signs to keep an eye out for:

Hesitancy to Show ID

A genuine Gas Safe registered engineer will always carry and willingly show their Gas Safe ID card when asked. If someone is hesitant, evasive, or outright refuses, keep them from undertaking work at your property.

Significantly Lower Quotes

Be wary of lower than average quotes. Such pricing can indicate a lack of proper qualifications or an intention to cut corners.

Vague Or Evasive Communication

A qualified engineer should be able to explain their work, the reasons behind it, and any recommendations they might have. If you’re faced with vague explanations or your questions are dodged, proceed cautiously.

Rushed Work Or Pressure Tactics

Beware of engineers who rush through the job or use high-pressure tactics to get you to agree to additional, potentially unnecessary work.

No Association With A Recognised Company Or Business

While many reputable gas engineers work independently, it can be a warning sign if someone has no affiliation or references from any recognised company or business and cannot provide references from past clients.

Unprofessional Appearance Or Behaviour

While appearances alone shouldn’t be a determining factor, an unprofessional demeanour, including lack of proper tools, can indicate a lack of genuine qualification.

Pushback On Written Agreements

Any engineer unwilling to provide written estimates or agreements or one who insists on cash payments without receipts should be treated with suspicion.

Reporting Suspicious Activity

If you encounter or suspect someone of being an unregistered engineer, it’s essential to report this to the Gas Safe Register to prevent potential harm to others.

In essence, while trust is important, verification is non-negotiable when it comes to gas safety.

Always trust your instincts. If something feels off, it’s worth taking the time to double-check. Safety, after all, always comes first.

We are pleased to announce that TM Hughes & Son Gas Services Ltd is now a Viessman partner and installers of Viessmann Boilers.

Who Are Viessmann ?

Viessmann is a renowned international heating, industrial, and refrigeration system manufacturer.

Founded in 1917 in Germany, the family-owned company has been at the forefront of producing energy-efficient solutions for both residential and commercial applications.

Viessmann’s product range covers various energy sources, including gas, oil, biomass, and solar.

The company has always emphasised innovation and invested significantly in research and development to ensure its products are of cutting-edge technology.

Their commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and high-quality manufacturing has solidified their reputation as a worldwide heating and cooling leader.

Viessmann Boilers

Viessmann offers a wide range of Boilers to cater to various energy sources and central heating systems.

Viessmann boilers are manufactured to a high standard in their main production facilities located in Allendorf (Eder), Germany.

The Allendorf factory is the headquarters of the Viessmann Group and serves as the company’s primary manufacturing site.

The Viessmann Boiler range includes:

Gas Condensing Boilers

These boilers are among the most popular in the Viessmann lineup. They are highly efficient and use gas as a fuel.

Viessmann’s gas-condensing boilers capture a significant portion of the heat that would otherwise escape through the flue in conventional boilers, resulting in excellent energy efficiency.

Oil Condensing Boilers

For properties not connected to the mains gas grid, Viessmann offers oil-fired boilers. These boilers utilise oil as a fuel and, like their gas Boilers, are highly efficient.

Combi Boilers

Viessmann Combination Boilers provide space heating and on-demand hot water without needing a separate tank to store hot water. Combi Boilers are ideal for small to medium-sized homes.

System Boilers

Viessmann System Boilers use a cylinder to store hot water, but most heating and hot water system components are built into the Boiler. Great for homes that have a medium to high hot water demand.

Regular Boilers

Also known as traditional boilers, Viessmann Regular Boilers have a cylinder that stores hot water and utilises water tanks to ensure the system is always topped up. Ideal for homes with traditional style systems and those with multiple bathrooms and high hot water usage.

Why You Should Consider A Viessmann Boiler

Viessmann Boilers are German-made and, like many other German-engineered products, have gained a reputation for quality, reliability, and advanced technology.

Here are some reasons why one might consider choosing a Viessmann Boiler:

High-Quality Standards

Germany is known for its rigorous manufacturing standards and strict quality controls. When you buy a German-made Boiler such as a Viessmann, you can be confident that it has undergone thorough testing and meets high-quality benchmarks.

Advanced Engineering

Viessmann has a long-standing reputation for engineering excellence. Viessmann Boilers include the latest technology, ensuring efficiency and reliability.

Energy Efficiency

Viessmann Boilers are built with energy efficiency in mind. This can result in reduced energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint.

Warranty

Viessmann Boilers come with a 7-year warranty as standard. The warranty can be extended to 10-12 years also. A Veissman Boiler will last a long time with proper care and maintenance.

Innovative Features

Viessmann is at the forefront of incorporating innovative features, such as advanced digital controls, integration with renewable energy sources, and smart home compatibility.

Support And Spare Parts Availability

Viessmann has a solid network for customer support and spare parts availability, ensuring that homeowners can maintain and repair their Boilers for many years.

Value For Money

While Viessmann Boilers might come with a higher initial cost than some other brands, their efficiency, longevity, and reduced maintenance costs make them a good investment in the long run.

Trust And Reputation

Viessmann has been in the industry for a long time and has built a reputation for trustworthiness and performance.

Viessmann Boilers, Installation, Service & Repair

Appliance running costs 2026: From 1 April to 30 June 2026, the UK energy price cap is £1,641 a year for a typical dual-fuel household, a decrease of around £117 compared to the previous period.

Electricity now costs around 24.5p per kWh with a daily standing charge of around 60p, while gas costs around 6.0p per kWh with a daily charge of around 31p.

Find out how much your appliance running costs will rise under the new rates.

Introduction

Managing household expenses involves understanding the costs of running household appliances.

This guide provides a full summary of appliance running costs in the UK based on the energy price cap effective from 1 April to 30 June 2026.

But before we dive into appliance costs, there’s one factor that shapes everything: the Energy Price Cap…

The Energy Price Cap

The energy price cap limits the maximum annual amount energy companies can charge customers on standard variable and default energy tariffs for a medium-usage household.

Set by Ofgem, the UK energy regulator, the cap is reviewed quarterly.

From 1 April to 30 June 2026, the energy price cap for a typical UK household using electricity and gas is £1,641 per year.

This is a decrease of around 7%, reducing bills by approximately £117 per year, or around £9.75 per month, for the average household.

For customers on a standard variable tariff paying by Direct Debit, the average cost of electricity is now around 24.5p per kWh, with a daily standing charge of around 60p.

Gas customers will pay an average of around 6.0p per kWh, with a daily standing charge of around 31p. These figures reflect the average rates across England, Scotland, and Wales, including VAT.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting—how these rates actually affect what you pay to run everyday appliances…

Understanding Appliance Running Costs

Several factors affect appliance running costs:

Energy Costs: The cost of electricity or gas determines running expenses.

Energy Efficiency: Appliances with higher energy ratings consume less electricity or gas for the same output as lower-rated ones.

Usage Patterns: The frequency and duration of appliance use impact running costs. These patterns vary by household.

But unit rates aren’t the whole story—standing charges also play a big role in your overall bill…

How Standing Charges Affect Your Energy Bill

Alongside the unit rates for gas and electricity, every household pays a fixed daily standing charge.

This fee covers the cost of maintaining the energy network and keeping your home connected, regardless of how much energy you use.

Under the April–June 2026 price cap, the standing charge is around £332 per year for an average dual-fuel household.

(based on combined daily standing charges of around 91p per day across gas and electricity.)

This means even if you use very little energy, you will still face these baseline costs.

Fuel Type

Daily Standing Charge (£)

Monthly Cost (£)

Yearly Cost (£)

Electricity

0.60

18.25

219.00

Gas

0.31

9.43

113.15

0.91

27.68

332.15

So if you can’t escape the standing charge, where can you save? The answer lies in how you use your appliances…

Strategies For Reducing Appliance Running Costs

Investing in energy-efficient appliances is one strategy to reduce running costs, but it’s not the only one.

For instance, an A+++ fridge saves around £20 per year compared to a similar A+ model. Similarly, an A+++ washing machine saves about £16 per year compared to an A+ model.

Regular maintenance and cleaning also help extend the life of your appliances and keep them at peak performance, reducing the energy they consume.

Moreover, smart technologies and home automation systems reduce energy costs.

These technologies set appliances to run during off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper or to turn them off when not in use.

Consider the following energy-saving tips and practices…

Fridge Freezers

Ensure the fridge-freezer is not placed near a heat source, such as an oven or radiator, and that there is enough space for air to circulate around it.

Keep the fridge and freezer full to reduce the energy needed to cool the space.

Defrost your freezer on a set schedule to keep it running at peak performance.

Ovens (Electric and Gas)

Only preheat when necessary and for the shortest time possible.

Use leftover heat for the last few minutes of baking.

Keep the oven door closed as much as possible to prevent heat loss.

Dishwashers

Run the dishwasher only when full.

If available, use an eco mode or an energy-saving setting.

Air-dry dishes instead of using the drying function.

Microwaves

Use the microwave for small and quick heating tasks instead of the oven or stove, as it uses less energy.

Defrost food in the fridge instead of using the microwave’s defrost function.

Kettles

Only boil as much water as needed.

Descalcify your kettle regularly.

Washing Machines

Wash clothes at lower temperatures.

Only run the machine with full loads.

Use eco-mode or energy-saving settings if available.

Tumble Dryers

Dry clothes naturally when possible.

Spin-dry clothes well before putting them in the tumble dryer to reduce drying time.

Clean the filter often to maintain peak performance.

Dehumidifiers

Only use when necessary.

Keep windows and doors closed when the dehumidifier is running.

Fans

Use fans instead of air conditioning units where possible.

Only use when in the room – fans cool people, not spaces.

Gas Boilers

Service your Boiler to maximise performance.

If your Boiler’s over 10 years old, consider replacing it.

Insulate your home well to reduce heating costs.

Install a programmable thermostat to control when the heating comes on and goes off.

Remember, while using appliances efficiently reduces your energy consumption, the most efficient appliance is the one that’s off. So, always turn off appliances when they are not in use.

No matter how efficient your habits are, some appliances simply cost more to run than others.

That’s where energy ratings come in…

Energy Ratings & Purchasing New Appliances

When purchasing energy-efficient appliances, several factors should be considered to make the best decision. Here are some tips:

Understand Energy Efficiency Labels

Look at the energy efficiency labels on the appliances. These labels show how much energy the appliance will use, shaping how much it will cost to run.

Appliance energy ratings are labels that provide information about an appliance’s energy efficiency.

These ratings are represented on a scale, with different levels indicating different levels of energy efficiency.

In the UK, energy efficiency ratings ranged from A+++ (most efficient) to D (least efficient).

However, to reduce confusion due to the multiple ‘+’ signs and to leave room for newer, more efficient models, a new scale from A to G was introduced in March 2021. A is the most efficient, and G is the least efficient.

The energy label also includes additional information, such as:

Energy consumption: Measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, this shows how much energy the appliance uses.

Volume: For fridges and freezers, this shows the internal capacity.

Noise: Measured in decibels (dB), this shows how much noise the appliance generates.

Water consumption: This shows how much water the appliance uses per cycle for washing machines and dishwashers.

Purchasing appliances with better energy ratings (closer to ‘A’) saves you money on your energy bills and reduces your carbon footprint.

Always consider an appliance’s energy efficiency when making a purchase decision, even if more efficient models are more expensive upfront.

Over the appliance’s lifetime, the energy savings often outweigh the higher initial cost.

Choose the Right Size

Buy appliances which fit your needs. Larger appliances usually consume more energy. For example, if you’re a small family, you don’t need a massive fridge-freezer, and a smaller, more efficient model serves you just as well.

Consider the Total Cost

Consider the total cost of owning the appliance, not just the purchase price. This total cost includes the purchase price and the operating costs of the appliance throughout its lifetime. An appliance with a higher purchase price but lower running costs is often cheaper in the long run.

Look at the Features

Some appliance features lead to increased energy use. Consider whether you need these features and whether you will use them. If not, choosing a simpler model saves energy.

Look for Variable Settings

Look for appliances with variable settings, such as a fridge which allows you to set different temperatures for different compartments or a washing machine with eco-modes. This lets you change the energy use based on your actual needs.

Read Reviews

Before buying, read reviews from other customers. They often share real-world experiences about the appliance’s performance and energy consumption.

Remember, the most energy-efficient appliance is the one which best meets your needs while using the least amount of energy.

Always take the time to compare different models and choose the one which fits your lifestyle and budget while saving the most energy.

So, what’s the bottom line after all these numbers?

Turn Knowledge Into Lower Energy Bills

We hope this guide has given you a clear picture of what your appliances really cost under the new energy price cap.

When you understand those running costs, you’re in control. You can make smarter buying choices, cut waste, and take charge of your energy use.

Energy efficiency isn’t just a buzzword — it’s the key to shrinking your bills. Choosing efficient appliances, using smart tech, and building energy-saving habits all add up.

So take a closer look at how much power your appliances are using.

Knowledge isn’t just power. In this case, it’s less power — and more money left in your pocket.

Reducing energy consumption in 2026 starts with understanding where energy is used at home. Next how small, practical changes can add up over time. Saving energy. Saving money.

With energy prices remaining high and the UK energy price cap reviewed quarterly, energy conservation remains a priority for households. Homes account for around a third of the UK’s total energy consumption. Meaning that everyday efficiency improvements can make a real difference.

This guide will teach you how to improve your home’s energy efficiency, embrace a more sustainable lifestyle, and save money.

This guide will walk you through various ways to improve your home’s energy efficiency, embrace a more sustainable lifestyle and save money.

The Home Energy Audit

Before reducing your home’s energy consumption, it’s essential to understand your current energy usage and identify areas for improvement.

Areas for improvement include

Appliances & Devices

Insulation

Heating & Cooling Systems

Water Heating

Lighting

A home energy audit systematically assesses your home’s energy performance. There’s no need for a professional assessment. Instead, you can do an energy audit yourself.

Once you have identified areas for improvement, you can create a personalised energy-saving plan and undertake the necessary changes around your home.

Appliances and Devices

Replacing your old appliances with modern energy-efficient models could reduce your home’s energy consumption.

In the UK, appliance energy efficiency is rated using the European Energy Label.

This label provides essential information on the energy performance, consumption, and environmental impact of household appliances, helping consumers make informed choices when purchasing new products.

The label was first introduced in 1994 and has undergone several revisions to keep pace with advances in technology and evolving energy-efficiency standards.

A new energy labelling system was implemented in March 2021 across the UK and the European Union.

The updated labelling system simplifies the energy efficiency ratings and encourages the development of new energy-efficient appliances.

Here are the key features of the new European Energy Label:

Energy Efficiency Scale: The new energy label rates appliances from A to G. A is the most energy-efficient, and G is the least efficient. The previous rating system included A+, A++, and A+++ classes, which have been removed to make the scale easier for consumers to understand.

Rescaled Ratings: The new system has been designed to leave room at the top of the scale for future improvements in energy efficiency. Very few products will initially receive an A rating, and many products previously classified as A+++ may now fall into the B or C categories.

QR Code: Each label now includes a QR code, which consumers can scan for more detailed information about the product’s energy performance and features.

Updated Product Categories: The new European Energy Label has been introduced for several appliance categories, including fridges, freezers, washing machines, washer-dryers, dishwashers, TVs and Monitors.

Additional Information: In addition to energy efficiency ratings, the label provides other information (where relevant), such as water consumption, noise levels, and capacity.

Always read the energy label when purchasing new appliances to determine the product’s energy efficiency and performance.

Choosing appliances with higher energy efficiency ratings should reduce energy consumption and energy bills.

Although the initial cost of energy-efficient appliances might be higher, the long-term savings on energy bills make them a worthwhile investment.

Smart home technology can also help optimise energy usage. Smart thermostats, for example, learn your schedule and adjust the temperature accordingly, reducing energy waste.

Program Smart lighting systems to turn off when rooms are unoccupied, further lowering consumption.

Additionally, heating can be controlled remotely, which, when used properly, can aid in energy conservation.

Reducing energy usage with appliances is equally important. Unplug devices when not in use and use energy-saving settings on washing machines, dishwashers, and televisions.

Insulation

Improving insulation is a cost-effective way to reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling. Weather-stripping and sealing air leaks around windows and doors will minimise drafts, while adding insulation to walls and lofts will keep your home warmer in winter.

Common insulating materials in the UK include mineral wool, rigid foam boards, and spray foam insulation.

Heating And Cooling

Regularly servicing and cleaning your heating and cooling systems will also improve efficiency. Replace filters as recommended and schedule annual servicing to ensure the peak performance of your Boiler and Air Conditioning units.

Adjusting temperature settings can significantly affect energy consumption.

Use programmable thermostats to create a schedule that reduces heating and cooling when you are away or asleep.

Water Heating

Water heating accounts for a large amount of home energy consumption.

Insulate your water cylinder (if you have one) and hot water pipes (if possible) to prevent heat loss.

You can also lower the temperature setting on your water heater to around 60°C (no lower) to save energy without compromising safety.

Lighting

Replacing old bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs will drastically reduce your home’s energy consumption.

LED bulbs use up to 90% less energy than traditional bulbs and last longer.

Use natural light to reduce reliance on energy-powered lighting.

Installing lighting controls will further optimise your energy usage. For example, motion sensors in hallways, bathrooms, and outdoor spaces ensure that lights are only on when needed.

Dimmer switches let you adjust lighting brightness to your exact preferences and, at lower intensities, save money.

Remember to purchase and install dimmable LED bulbs if you plan to use dimmer switches.

Conclusion

By undertaking a home energy audit, upgrading your appliances, improving heating and cooling efficiency and optimising your lighting, you will create a more energy-efficient home, save money and lower your carbon footprint.
