On the 1st of April, every year Essex & Suffolk water change their prices, meaning extra cost for the Essex household. There is two methods Essex & Suffolk water use to bill their customers.
Unmetered charges – Includes a fixed charge plus a charge based on the rateable value of your property.
Metered Charges – Includes a fixed charge plus a charge for the amount of water you use.
Unfortunately, you cannot switch your supplier and get a cheaper deal (unlike electricity). You have to use the water company that supplies your area.
Luckily there are 3 cheap and simple things you can do that will cut waste water and save you money on your water bills.
1, Fix All Leaks
You might not think that dripping taps and leaking toilet cisterns don’t waste a lot of water, but they do.
A leaking tap can waste up to 35000 litres of water a year (costing you around £55 a year if you’re on a water meter)
A leaking toilet cistern can waste up to 60000 litres of water a year (costing you £93 a year if you’re on a water meter)
A single leaking tap and toilet cistern in your home could be costing you £150 a year. These leaks are quick and cheap to repair. Check for leaks and if you have any make sure you get them repaired.
2, Showers Instead Of Baths
A bath uses 80 litres of water
A 5-minute shower uses 35 litres of water
A single person taking a bath every day will cost £45 a year
A single person taking a shower every day will cost £20 a year
As you can see you will save a significant amount of money per annum if everyone in your household swaps baths for showers.
3, Water Saving Toilets And Showers
Now you have fixed your leaking toilet and switched to showers you can save even more money with these water saving gadgets.
Dual Flush Toilets
Old style toilets can use up to 13 litres a flush; modern dual flush toilets use less water only 4-6 litres a flush. They have two flushing options a small flush and a large flush.
A small flush uses only 4 litres of water per flush
A large flush (for solids) uses 6 litres of water per flush
Shower heads
Modern water efficient shower heads give a powerful shower and use less water. A simple replacement of your shower head could reduce your water usage.
